IHC diesels are absolutely horrible. Stay away.
IHC steam is OK: they run well, look OK, and are a decent value. Most engines are NOT a prototype of anything, but are freelanced. In that respect, you may want to look elsewhere. In addition, you can regularly find Bachmann Spectrum steam for less than IHC engines. Since B-S engines are MUCH better, they’re a viable alternative.
My favorite IHC steamer is the 4-8-2. It’s an OK C&O prototype, and can be kitbashed into several other Mountains. They also run and pull respectably.
IHC’s steam engines are smooth, quiet, reliable runners. The detail on some is pretty good, but others are a little plain. The plastic is pretty soft, so they can be detailed easily.[:D]
Most people you talk to will say IHC diesels are bad, but with a tiny bit of work and a pair of Atlas worms (which only add an extra $2), they can be very nice engines. My C-628 is one of the smoothest runners I have.[:D] And since I detailed it and filled in the front pilot, it looks pretty good, too.[:D]
See my post on the prototype information forum.
they are a good source of chassis.

Do a search on this forum for my review of the IHC 4-6-2, and Darth Santa Fe’s review of the 2-6-0 and 2-8-2.
