[:)] Hi to all, I have been helping my son Carl with his layout in his garage. It is getting very hot here in the state of Arizona now so things will start to slow down for this Old Timer. My son is AC4400fanCarl. He has talked me into joining this forum. Looking forwards to chatting with all. Grew up in Freeport Illinois and use to hang out at the Illinois Central Depot along the IC tracks to watch the steam locomotives pulling freight from Omaha to Chicago and points south. My grandmothers husband was a engineer for the IC and his engine was a 2882 and the number was 2222. Sure wish I knew what happened to that engine. I guess it probably got scrapped in Kentucky.
Thanks for all your time.

[#welcome] hi pop welcome…
Welcome to the group Don! Glad to see more IC fans out there!
A little information about your family member in the IC, none good unfortunately. The IC had neither 2-8-8-2’s nor an engine numbered 2222. The IC did have four 2-6-6-2’s that they inherited from an absorbed railroad in the 1930s, but they never left the Pacucah, KY, area. And while the 2000 munber series was reserved for IC 2-8-2s, they didn’t have any that were numbered 2222 (or any other engine with that number, for that matter). Welcome to the forum! I’m sure enjoy it as much as the rest of us.
Don,
Welcome! I’m also from Illinois and now living in Sierra Vista, Arizona. I was raised in Pinckneyville. Our house was 100 feet from double-track IC main that ran from St. Louis to DuQuoin, where it joined the north-south IC main. The Missouri Pacific and IC both had roundhouses in Pinckneyville, and I used to hang out there a lot when I was in elementary school.
The last time I was ever back in Pinckneyville to attend my mother’s funeral, all of the IC and MOP roundhouse facilities had been torn out, the depots were gone, and no trains even slow down now as they go through town.
The hostler at the MOP roundhouse used to let me ride around in the cab with him as he shuttled and serviced the steam engines. As near as I recall, they were all Mikado and Mountain types. The IC, too, ran Mikado and Mountain engines.
During and after World War II, IC passenger trains that came through Pinckneyville were pulled by Pacific locomotives. The MOP ran a Doodlebug through town twice daily between Chester and Mount Vernon. The last time I ever saw the MOP Doodlebug it was rusting away in Dupo, Illinois.

Ray, I want to thank you for the address of the IC Web page and pictures.
So much of this information is hard to find.
Do you have an address for the NKP pictures also???

Sorry Bangert, but I haven’t started posting NKP data online yet (and I’ve got more of it than the IC stuff!) The IC steam data that I posted to Michael’s IC site took a bit of doing between the two of us, but it’s turned out to be a really useful site. I’m thinking about creating a similar site as a repository of NKP data, but for now just have everything saved to disc.
Contact me offlist if there’s anything you’re looking for in terms of NKP data, and I’ll see what I can come up with. I’ve got THOUSANDS of digitized NKP photos, not to mention track charts, ETT’s, blueprints, and related items. I’m working on similar digital databases for most of the roads leading into Peoria (TP&W, C&IM, P&E, P&PU, M&StL, and the Pennsy’s Peoria branch).
Welcome to the board, Don. That boy of yours seems to be a hard charger in regard to the railroad. It’s looking great! Look forward to hearing more about it soon.
I grew up in Chicago, but didn’t get to see the IC there much. But I did get to see it when we went down to visit relatives in Clinton. I use to like the IC/ICG. In fact, I believe my first electric train was a Tyco set with an ICG engine.
Ironically, my mom’s house backs up to a IC/CN track now.
