Illiterate ebay seller...

Hello all. Hope everyone made it through Christmas okay. I woke up the other morning and checked my e-mail to find that I had been reported to ebay by a seller for not sending him payment for a piece of rolling stock that I agreed to purchase from him a couple of weeks ago… He doesn’t have a PayPal account, so he only accepts money orders or bank cashiers checks as payment only. I’ve written him several times since then requesting his address without any response. Now today I finally get a reply from one of his family members apologizing to me for all the trouble, and explaining to me that this guy (the seller) is functionally illiterate and doesn’t read or write… If he doesn’t read or write he has no business trying to sell things on ebay!. Apparently someone helped him set it all up then walked away. I can’t believe that… Tracklayer

What does this have to do with trains? David

I don’t mind seeing posts in regards to other folks eBay adventures. Sometimes it gives me a heads up of new stuff to look out for on eBay. It seems a lot of folks on this forum either use or have used eBay.

One - It involves the purchase of a train car. That’s what rolling stock is in case you didn’t know… Two - A lot of our members here on the forum do a lot of business on ebay and know all too well the frustration they sometimes run into with idiots (sellers) that can barely read or write. Okay. Does that help you personally to understand this thread David ?!.. Tracklayer

As long as the person has DEPENDABLE help then why not? In YOUR case it sounds like he lacks that help.[:(]

A question does come to mind…IF he can not read nor write maybe he has “promise help” that is short on “helping” and long on promising but,on the other hand if this person turn you in for none pay then there is a error some where.[%-)]

If he’s so illiterate, how is it that he was able to navigate around on ebay and report me for nonpayment ?.. One would have to do a bit of reading in order to do so would they not ?. I’m sorry, but I have no patients with people that can’t read or write now a days, especially anyone over the age of 18… I work with a fifty five year old woman that is constantly asking me how to spell things. I finally bought her a elementary school level dictionary and told her that she was on her own from here on out!. It’s a sad fact that if it weren’t for Spell Check on our computers, a lot of people out there would be in trouble - and I’m talking about people with college degrees… I see people here on the forum making a statement like “me to”, when it should be “me too”. Or they’ll say “thay did” when it should be “they did”… We’ve had this issue come up before here on the forum, and there’s always those that will say as long as they can understand what the other person is saying that that’s all that matters, or there will be some joker that will do their entire reply using all misspelled words just for spite. Oh well. Right is right and stupid is stupid and that’s just the way it is… Tracklayer

Perhaps you could get a little off your high horse?

It is interesting how he manage to sign up on e bay with a bank card or credit card-a must have.

Now stupid is as stupid does…I seen smart people lack every day common sense and I seen Illiterate people smart when it comes to common sense…Go figure…I gave up years ago.[:D][swg]

Tracklayer,

Sorry to read about your situation.

Did he leave you any “Feedback”?

No Antonio. I haven’t left any feedback yet, nor has he. I won’t until after the matter is settled and I know for certain who and what I’m really dealing with. Tracklayer

Unless he has a medical degree, it’s probably a good thing he has no patients.

WARNING: Venting to follow!!!

  1. I probably see 3-6 egregiously flawed eBay listings per week; things as bad as the wrong road name, the wrong manufacturer, the wrong scale, etc. I’ve also had a few eBay transactions go less than smoothly. BUT, I don’t burden everyone here with each mistake I find in an ad or each e-mail I trade with a potential seller.

  2. If one is going to call someone out on his/her English skills, that member ought to be able to spell and or use proper grammar him/herself.

  3. Most people understand that eBay is a murky place.

I’ll get down off my own high horse now.

A fool and his money will be separated using ebay. Always has been that way, always will.

People thing they are getting bargains…[#wstupid]

I have found some great bargains on eBay on brass and OOP items. I just got an Atlas Silver Series SD24 (Santa Fe) for $56.

functionally literate isn’t listed on Ebay’s terms of use policy

Wow…just wow…

No one on these forums wants to hear about you getting ripped off on e bay…in fact we are all laughing AT you…you got taken and you will never learn. Do your RESEARCH on the SELLER before you BID on an E BAY ITEM. Do you understand that? That is Ebay 101…the first thing you learn when you buy from ebay.

If the seller is a retard, then that makes you a retard for buying from him.

Understand? If not, Ill use smaller words next time. Ebay threads really dont belong on these forums…IMHO

David

personally i don’t mind seeing ebay threads here , since i can always choose to read them or not , and i’ve learned a bit about buying and selling on ebay from reading things here . what i don’t like seeing is members insulting each other , so could you both tone it down please ?

And the winner, by TKO, jsoderq!!!

Jeff

How dare you share your ebay story with us!!! And exactly how is attempting to buy a train car off of ebay even remotely related to the trains.com forum??? Oh, the horror!!!

And you are a “retard” for buying it, especially since your original post said nothing about actually sending money. If you were a true ebay-er you would be able to spot an illiterate-retard ebay seller a mile away!

Shame on you [:D]

That a significant number of eBay sellers are illiterate, surly, and entirely incapable of focusing a digital camera is pretty much a given. At the same time I’m not particularly averse to hearing individual gripes or experiences…
