Like what kind of scenery ? Mountians, rivers, hills, tunnels, bridges, culverts, piling walls, cliffs, lakes, creeks, oceans. What are you trying to model? Is it in the mountains? Flat plains of the midwest ? Southern mole hills ? Just a little more info Kevin, maybe some of us can help you.

Kind of hard for us to post scenery tips when there are so many.

First, search the forum for topics related to scenery. There will be tons of them! Look through them for ideas that appeal to you.

When you know what area you will be working on but still need additional information, then post a specific question on the forum. That helps other members customize their answer to you and gives you better suggestions.

Darrell, quiet…for now

Keep some balsa wood & a sharp knife in hand.Welcome to the forums.

Best thing I can tell you, if you are new to the whole thing and have more questions to ask than you can think of… I would do some shopping and get some scenry books, and heck, maybe even a video or two. They are a great way to start. Give you all the info you need to get you started. You may be surprised what you can learn on your own.

Scenery, I think most people will agree, is probably the hardest aspect to talk about in the model train world or give advice for. There is no “Concrete Proven Method” to scenery. Wiring, track work, are all pretty straight foward. Only a few ways to do each, and it will work or it wont.

With Scenery, you can have 20 guys give you 20 different tips on how to make a pine tree, and all 20 will think their tree looks the best. There are so many ways to acheive good scenery work, and also, so many different ways people will look at a scene and like, or not.

I would do some home work, and try and find some techniques that work for you, or somethign you feel you can do. Maybe, find some scenery work that you think really looks good. Then find out how they did it and go form there. Either way, good luck to you and welcome to the hobby.

Hope that helps with a little direction.[:D]

Model Railroader just sent a dvd to subscribers with some ideas. The dvd was pretty inexpensive.

also many other message threads on this site have been about scenery methods

MR put out a couple of How To books profiling their building of their project layouts. My ‘Bible’ was their book on ‘How to build the Clichfield’. It show you everything you need to know when designing, building, wiring, scenicing and running a modular layout. I have used their PINK FOAM scenery and the wiring of diode matices on three of my last layouts and modules. MR probably has copies and some of he larger hobby shops carry them too. For a beginner (as I was) thru to the ‘experts’, these books are a godsend. Get one, you won’t regret it. JW. Montreal QC
