Yesterday was my last day of work! I am now officially retired! Later this morning we take off on a road trip uf unknown destination or duration. When we get back, it’s off to the basement for full time trains! Unless of course, I’m working on my '71 Fiat, or out taking pictures of trains, or playing golf (weather permitting), or riding my bicycle, etc., etc.
Work was definitely getting in the way of what I wanted to do. I’m about two and a half years ahead of schedule but due to some changes at work, I decided it was time to cash out.
To a long varied pursuit of fun. Hide the honey do jar and watch out for what everyone wants to "volunteer’ you for. Enjoy the retirement from “work”!

absolutley awesome! Now you can spend time doing what you like, and be glad thats railroading. Random trips to anwhere are fuuuuun, but since its autumn, you might as well go Foliage Watching! Along with Train watching!
Congratulations! I’ve been out for four and a half years, loving every minute of it! While I didn’t mind working at my job, it’s still nicer not having to.
I had heard before I retired that while you do have a lot more time, you don’t necessarily get a whole lot more done. When you are working, your hobby/leisure time is precious, and you make the best of what time you have. When you’re retired, you have all the time in the world, so instead of completing a project, you think you’ll do it later. Then you get busy doing other things and the original projects get set aside or forgotten.
Some people thought because I have hobbies that I would be churning things at a faster pace. But hobbies are just that - part time passtimes, and not full time work. So I do what I want when I want. Or not at all.
Congrats. Sometimes retiremet seems really nice to me. Other times I don’t know how I’d handle it. Often it just depends how much sleep I’ve gotten that day.
I’m SO glad to read that you’re retired. From the title of the thread, I thought you were going to say you were done with your layout. That would have spawned an endless stream of “no layout is ever done” comments.
fantastic !
i think no destination road trips are the best vacations . having no time duration set on it as well isn’t something i’ve experienced yet , but it sounds good [:)]
That must have been a wonderful feeling, waking that first morning.
I have much more time to myself, but if you are married, the Other will still want her time with you. Enjoy your trip (try hard to sound like you are really “there”), make it a truly memorable one…that will be worth more than any amount of money. Great currency for when you want more trains, too.
Congrats and welcome to the paradise of retirement. People who worry about not having anything to do in retirement have it all wrong. You have a choice, but you can be more busy than when you worked. The grand thing is you can be busy doing the things you want to do and when you want to do them, i.e. ‘put off today what you can do tomorrow’.[:D]
