I'm finally starting a layout!!!!!

I went over to Menard’s today and picked up the things I need for benchwork. It will be a 7’ by 4’ HO layout on 2" foam board glued on top of 7/16" OSB wood on top of a folding table made of recycled plastic milk cartons. The table is actually very sturdy for being so cheap.[:)]

Next on my list of things to get is some cork roadbed, 22" radius track and some wood trim stuff to go around the edges of the layout to protect the foam. You may not have noticed, but I’m a little excited.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Good luck. BUt why not just do the 4’x8’ layout? You get a better radius. While your at it maybe even go for 4’x10’? Must be a space issue?

Well your light saber should make quick work of trimming things to size.

James

I was going to do a 4’x8’, but there’s not enough room for one.[:(] But there is just enough room to squeeze a 4’x7’ in. That should be good enough for me.[:)]

Yes, it probably will help alot. I had to buy 4’x’8’ sheets of wood and foam, so I need to cut a foot off of each one. I’m thinking I’ll use the leftovers to make a nice display stand for my Challenger.[:D][:D]

What would the fumes be like when trimming foam with a lightsaber?
Great to hear about getting a new layout.

Congradulations. I’m elbow deep in mine now, and still can’t believe I actually started. Keep us posted.

Hey I know how you feel. Seems like I’ve been looking at and working on that layout plan for months and months.

Good luck and let the fun begin!

Darth. Is it possible to do it just a little wider? i was going to do at my start 4’ wide but i went 5’ wide the results were alot better

Carl…

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re not going to get a 22" radius on only a 4’ section of plywood without it almost going off the edge…the best you can do is a 15" or 18" radius…now if there were some way to get the width from 4’ to 5’ it will work…chuck

Well if he puts 22" curves on an 48" table he will 2" on eather side[:)]

Git 'R Done Darth!!

WOW. Congratulations. Every time I finally got started it was wonderful, the last being the best. Someday I may finish one, or at least a scene on it. Waiting for first pic with the challenger.

that’s what i’m talking about …2" on either side is a derailment that hits the floor every time…I don’t want to be discouraging but i hope he has a lot of money for all those replacement parts…15" or 18" radius is the way to go for plywood dimentions…chuck

I thought about how wide the 22" would be, and figured out that it will still fit on the 4’x7’ easily.[:)] I want 22" because I own alot of big engines that would work better on wider turns.(Challenger, SD80MAC, DL-109, DDA40X, DD40, 4-8-4…) 2" on each side should be plenty of room left on the sides.[:D]

The first picture should be up pretty soon.(1-2 weeks, hopefully) I should have the track on by then.[:D]

Great Darth. Work the heck out of what space you got.

I don’t think derailments will be a problem. I rarely have any on my current track-on-the-carpet layout, and most of the derailments are very minor. Their mostly just an axle on a large engine coming off the track, which doesn’t seem to do any damage.[:D]

your’e gonna have to take in the fact that it will be less than 1" on each side …the 22" is the center of the track and that means the outside rail will come out another
1 1/8"…that’s cutting it pretty close…if you can just add another foot will do wonders…chuck

Hmmm… maybe I can put something around the layout that sticks up about 1" for extra protection. I don’t think I could add another foot to the layout. 4’x7’ is the most I can have right now. Any bigger and it would take up too much space.
