I'm new.

Hello,

My name is Josh, I live in Oregon, the land of Union Pacific. Haw haw. I am an SP fan, always have, probably always will. I used to like UP a lot until SP vanished and there was nothing but Armor Yellow on the rails. And where I live, the only time I get to see BNSF is on you tube or the occasional run through.

BNSF is probably my second favorite Railroad. I’ve always like BN and SF, and of all the mergers I think thats my favorite.

My goal in model railroading is to create a modern Southern Pacific Railroad. I want SD70MAC’s, 80MAC’s, 90/43MAC’s (Ive actually painted a kato SD90MAC into SP Speed lettering. I have yet to finish it but it is grey and scarlet) AC4400CW’s, and maybe ES44AC’s.

I look forward to getting to know some people on here and trading ideas.

Hope yall have a great Christmas.

Josh,

Welcome to the "Forum". [swg]

There are a lot of interesting subjects and people here. Hope you enjoy it. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.[<:o)]

Welcome to the forum! I live in Oregon as well but I am a big CSX fan but I guess that is what is great about MRR, you can model what you like and what time period you want.

[#welcome] to the forums!!!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Two things can be very helpful: google and our “search our community” feature in the right hand side margin!!! Just type in a subject and the threads here will come up on that subject with links you can click on to get there,

There are a lot of guys here who have a lot of good info and help to offer. Anything you learn along the way you can post to threads to help others out is always [#welcome]!!!

Hope you have a GREAT Christmas and Santa brings you good train “toys”!!!

Welcome Josh

What scale are you thinking of modeling and how much space do you have available?

If you subscribe to Model Railroader magazine, it opens up a lot of user content on their website including many track plans.

Hi Josh! Welcome to the forums!

Sounds like you have some modeling experience if you are painting locos. You might post a picture of your SD90MAC ‘work in progress’, as well as other things you have done.

Posting your track plan can also garner some useful suggestions (if you want them). It did for mine.

The ‘Search Our Community’ tool is good but don’t be afraid to ask questions even though the question might have been asked and answered before. If nobody asks questions because they relied entirely on the search engine this forum would die out pretty quick. Besides, it is great for our egos - that is those of us who think we know what we are talking about! (Some actually do know what they are talking about!)[swg]

By the way, what scale are you in?

Dave

That is cool you live in Oregon, what part?

Yeah I think that is what I like about most of model railroading. While SP is my main focus. In all reality I like any road for the most part, at least in the United States and Canada. If its on flanged wheels and its American or Canadian, I like it.

I actually have a PRR T-1, so yeah.

I model HO. I don’t have much space, I just belong to a train club. So I just build up my locomotive fleet until the day I am actually able to build my epic SP modern Empire, haw haw. I can dream cant I?

Regards,

Joshua.

I live in Hillsboro, just outside of Portland. Being part of a club is a great way to learn and gets you exposed to alot of trains and ways to do things. Sounds like you are on a good start.

Hi there Josh,

I am new in here too, and I have a mate thats starting up as well, thanks to a benevolent wife  , and he loves the SP, but hates steam, so he is also imageneering a modern SP

Welcome to the forums bud,

Pray your Christmas was a Blessed one, and that 2012 brings you bountiful joy.

Greg

Welcome, New.

Ejoy the forum [:D]

(someone had to do it!)

Welcome to both new members. Although I think some of my fellow old-hands are misleading you… it’s spelled a-s-y-l-u-m, not f-o-r-u-m. [:)]

Since I’m modeling a regional road on the other side of the continent, and in the transition era to boot, I doubt I’ll be able to give you much specific advice on your modern SP layouts.

However, I’ll be glad to lend a hand with any modelling or general design questions that come up. And, my firm belief is, yes, it’s perfectly okay to dream!

May your model railroading days be long and free from distractions, and may you never need a Band-Aid (or a cold compress, or a splint, or an ambulance).

I wasn’t sure which was worse: Threadjacking or creating another “I’m new” thread. I decided on the former.

I am also new. When I was a kid I was gifted my dad’s old Lionel O gauge set. We put a very amateur setup together that my dad wired. Fast forward 20 years to last Christmas. I have wanted to work with model railroading for all of that time, but haven’t touched or read a thing. Last Christmas I decided to dig out the old Lionel and run it around the tree. I picked up some new track (with the built in road bed) and set it up under the tree. The controller was dead, so I had to get a new one, but the engines all work like a charm (give or take a whistle or two). Since that time, I also came into possession of my maternal grandfather’s Lionel O gauge trains. They are in decidedly worse condition, but I would presume are salvageable. This Christmas I again ran the train under the tree, and also received a few books to get me started (Building City Scenery and Model Railroading in Small Spaces).

I have no idea where to start. I am making my way through those two books, and also trying to soak up a number of online resources. Because of my space limitations, I am leaning toward N gauge, but I could swing toward HO because of the popularity and availability of pre-fab pieces. I know for sure that I want to do an urban layout – the only question is whether I try to prototype something or not. Washington, DC (which would be my preference) seems to have a shortage of local train model availability (I have found one HO Trolley and nothing modern). I have lots of ideas floating around, I just need to reign them in and learn what is feasible and start planning.

I think my best bet is to read to an extent, but then to just dive in. I generally learn best by doing. My current plan is to put together a roughly 4’x4’ layout. I have lots of ideas about layouts that can fold away out of view, but I think that may be something to look at after I ha
