Before I go snapping something off, how do I open this cover on the Kato SD40-2?

It is different than the 4 wheel Atlas/Katos I have up to now.
Nothing in the literature with the loco about this procedure
Thanks for any tips.

Ok let me see if I can help you out here I have been doing alot of working on Kato’s lately and I find it easier to remove the shell from the chassis 1st… then I remove the trucks from the frame…if you look at your picture you provided you can see the little clips that hold on the bottom cover on… with the Loco facing the way you picture it there is 1 clip behind each of the wheel 3 clips per side… you will need a small thin bladed flat tip screwdriver to slide under them from the top of the truck that is why you must remove the truck …I hope this help let me know if I can be of any further assistance Good luck

I never had to remove the truck.
Just Bend one of those jeweler screwdrivers at a 90 degree angle and unclip one side at a time. I know its scary, but I haven’t broken one yet. The acetal plastic is very strong and difficult to break. Just bite your lip and go for it.
Thanks, Gentlemen.
I knew it looked a little different procedure than the C-424s I have with a tab on the ends. I see why you each have suggested a “wrinkle” in your procedure–removing the truck or using a 90 degree bend in a screwdriver. The tabs are rather awkward down there between the wheels and requiring lifting on the end opposite the upturned wheels.
But I got it now with your help.
