Im on vacation and saw some nice trains.

Hey guys! Im on a 2 week vacation out west (Idaho,Wyoming,Montana) And we flew in to Salt Lake City today. We are currently driving to our first stop. In Idaho (im using my dads labtop) The Up line followed the highway through the middle of no were! Its nice scenery out here though. I saw a lone US.Army locomotive,a string of about 10 Up box cars. Then we went over a bridge wich the RR ran under. There I saw a 2 unit Up mixed freight. I also saw a few tank cars parked on a spur. Just lettinbg you guys no what I saw. Have a good night. Tim

Cool experience and nice report. Thanks for the update. Maybe some pics when you are back???

Thanxs Art! I will try to catch some trains withy my moms digital camera. I might not see any more until my way back though. I dont think many RRs go through National Parks. Happy Modeling/train hunting.

We will be taking the Empire Builder through Yellowstone this fall, so at least one train runs through ine park. I hope to see more. I bet you will find some cool trains where you least expect them. Greet your parents and tell them thanks for a great trip, complete with internet and camera.

trainfreek, The BNSF mainline, old GN, skirts the southern edge of Glacier park and actually has two staions one on the west side and one at east glacier.

Art Hill has the empire Builder changed its route. I thought it only ran on the old GN mainline thru northern MT. Have a nice time in Yellowstone however you get there though.

I don’t believe the Empire Builder actually goes THROUGH Yellowstone (based on my being there every year for the last 5 yrs and logging 150 miles or so of trails!! [;)])…I believe it may stop somewhere near the north entrance and buses then take folks into the park from there…but it actually goes through Glacier Nat’l Park…so not sure about the Yellowstone connection. If you’re given the opportunity, see if you can take a day hike while you’re there…a very different and, to me, best way to experience Yellowstone. It’s said that if you only do one day hike while in Yellowstone, make it the Mt. Washburn trail…only 3 miles each way but a steady climb going up to 10,300+ with an incredible vista. Also, if you’re there in the evening, the Hayden Valley wolf pack was out pretty regularly after about 7:30 while we were there a coupla’ weeks ago.

When we go to Yellowstone, we fly into Denver then drive to the park…taking the Cheyenne / Lander / Dubois / Moran Junction route. The road from Denver to Cheyenne and Cheyenne to 287, which leads to Lander, is rich in railroading…lots to see, especially UP.

Cheers,

Mike

OK, you guys are right. When we went to Yellowstone we took the motorhome. We did get to take in about a dozen hikes. This will be our first trip away from the motorhome in 15 years. I have not riden a train since 1950. I sence I will have a lot to learn and see about routes as well as ediquite(sp).
