While Christmas shopping for my daughter in the junkstore (she wasn’t amused) I spotted this cabinet and talked the storekeeper down to $40.
Not bad, considering all the glass is intact and it’s lighted. It’s just particle board and foil but the shelves are nice and deep (12" by 30").
I made a few additions: I wanted eco-flourescents and since the small ones hidden by the valence only come in 60 watt equivalents (13 watts ecofreako) I added another fixture and an inline switch.
The shelf pins were not the right size so I hammered screw bases into each hole and put in 1/4" bolts to hold the shelves up. Now I can load in the locos.
It’s got pins for 3 more shelves. I’m going to get them tomorrow. I’m really pleased as I have a lot of locos that should be out and seen rather than in their boxes.
Go haunt your junkstores if you are not already in the habit.
Ah, Mr. G. I see you are of the Swedish persuasion. You might like my other cabinets instead. I have 3 of these…from “the store of the strangely named furniture.”
and one of these still in its box waiting for the move to the new home. This will hold some of my steam locos.
Well, it may be a mix of styles, but I am slowly getting enough shelving to satisfy me.
I thought I hit a bit of a snag when I went to the glass shop to price out 3 more shelves of the sort in the cabinet. $80,00! I couldn’t believe it! For three 30" shelves.
So back to a second junk store. No glass in sight. But as I was leaving, the shopkeeper told me she had some in the back…and sold me 4 six-foot by twelve-inch 6 mm shelves for $25. My wife can pget them cut across in to shelves for free (hopefully) by another glass shop that owes her a favor.
Now I have extra. And of course, we collectors know one can never have too much good extra stuff !
