Improvements planned for Providence station

The photo provided does not appear to be the Providence, RI Amtrak/MBTA station.

Picture attached to this article is NOT Providence! All platforms in Providence are underground. Providence was, based upon appearance, designed in passenger areas like Penn Station in NY. A blah space above the tracks and a utilitarian tunnel (bridge) under the station for the platforms and trains.

At first I thought “built in 1986” was a typo. I recalled Providence’s former New Haven cum Amtrak station from my Navy days in the early 1970s as being much older than that. I assumed Amtrak was still using it, but found the 1986 complex on satellite images. I wonder whether the old NH structure was in need of such repairs just 26 years after its inauguration.

Yeah, I know, typical railfan comment, BUT the OLD Station was MUCH BETTER.

That photo doesn’t look like Providence.

The photo attached to this article is of the Wilmington, DE Amtrak station – the tracks and platforms at PVD do run underneath the station, however a good photo op is to be had from the east end of the platform, looking at the home board to “Orms” Interlocking.

The first time I used this facility I thought: What kind of joke is this with absolutely terrible street access and of course no way for inter mode connections. I don’t think there is even much access for city buses. It is just awful. My conclusion upon my first visit is that it was done to try to kill off any passenger service to Providence!
