In memoriam: Model Railroader author Earl Smallshaw

During the 1997 NMRA convention layout tours, one gentleman came up to me to make positive comments about my newly constructed layout. I didn’t catch his name until later…Earl Smallshaw. It made me feel great that a modeler of his stature would seek me out to say something nice.

Very talented man. May God bless and comfort his family.

Sad to read of the passing of another leading modeler. R.I.P. Earl.

Earl was very influential on my modeling and hobby interest from a very young age. I had an opportunity to visit Earl with my son and was most impressed with his interest in young people and encouraging them in our hobby.
Will be missed. My sincere condolences to Earl’s family.

My condolences to his family. Earl’s modeling was very impressive and inspiring. His tenement article was really
neat; considering it was HO scale. He will be missed.

One the original “Greats” has gone.
R.I.P.

I always looked forward to articles by Earl in MR back in the early sixties when I was a young modeler. His work and humor made a big impression on me. He is definitely up there in modeling stature with the best!
My condolences to his family, and to all of us who will miss him.

Sad to see one of the great modellers pass away. He was one of those who influenced me in my early years of modeling in the 70s and 80s. Condolences to his family.
