Hey all. I am missing one sideframe for my gp-40x athearn loco. I called athearn and they do not have any in stock and don’t know when they will have them and will not let me order it for a backorder. I was wondering if any of you had one extra sittin around that you are willing to part with. Please let me know if you have one and what you want for it.
Did this loco have a different sideframe than what would come on a typical EMD GP unit? I’m assuming it is a plug-in plastic sideframe, but there was a Blomburg “B” sideframe and a Blomburg “M” sideframe(please don’t hold me to the letters, as I’m trying to recall from faulty memory). I think the difference was that the earlier sideframe did not have any axle snubbers, while the newer models did.
Thanks all for looking. On the athearn website and from talking to the parts guy it is the same frame they used on the gp-38 and fp-7 or something and one other.
Undec would be great I can paint it to match as needed.
I found the sideframes, however details like speed recorders and brake cylinders have not been applied yet. I’ll keep looking for the rest of the parts and if/when I find them I can send them off to you.
Not sure if this matters or not but this is the ready to roll, dcc newer model of the gp40x. Did the RTR and the Blue box use the same trucks and sideframes?
I’ll go back to my original question and ask again: is it the typical EMD Blomburg B truck, M truck, or something special? I didn’t find this engine listed on the HOSeeker site. It might be helpful if you had the part number for the sideframe in question so that folks could compare that number against what they might have laying around.
It’s not, its an experimental High Adhesion Truck. I’ve found all except one bearing cap but I’ll keep digging for that and let you know when I’ve pulled together all the parts.
Since these trucks haven’t appeared on any other diesels I know of, I’m guessing they were a failure of some sort (like the Krauss Maffei hydraulic diesels)?
rs2mike, Athearn uses a one size fits all 2 axle truck, so all of their 4 axle diesels (minus the switchers) use the exact same inner truck.
Rail Power (RPP) offered HTB sideframes for their GP40X shell, prior to Athearn acquiring the tooling. The sideframe set isn’t as clean as the one on the Athearn RTR models, but there’s another option for you. They sell for $8.50 at the A-Line website (probably cheaper if you look around).
The Santa Fe and BNSF (among others) use blomberg-M sideframes on their GP40X’s. To keep your GP40X “prototypical” you should use blomberg-M sideframes and those can be found pretty much anywhere. If the other guy on the forum can’t come through for you with the sideframe he’s going to give you, let me know and I’ll send you what you need, no charge.
