In search of: Paradise (A bar near the tracks)

I think I am familiar with this place is the “Silver Chalet” parked outside the bar?

I really wish I had time to stop there the last time I was in Wisconsin.

At the crest of your hill no less. Next time I come up for a Notre Dame football game, I am going to have to take you up on your offer.

Well, my two local favorites are the Titletown brewery/restaruant in the old Green Bay, WI, C&NW depot, right next to the CN tracks and the Sports Corner bar/restaurant in De Pere, WI, just a few miles down the same line. I know there’s a place in Glenview, IL, that I can see from the Hiawathas when I’m travelling-I think it’s called Grandpa’s? I keep meaning to stopover and grab lunch but never have gotten around to it.

I might be going to Denver around Thanksgiving and I’ve seen a g/l/b/t bar along trackside between the BNSF and Denver Union Station tracks but I can’t remember the name of it and I don’t know if it serves food. It’s just plopped down by itself with tracks on three sides, so you couldn’t ask for a better location. I don’t know if I want to try train watching from an open deck (if they have one) in Denver in late November, though…on the other hand I’ve noticed the Wynkoop Brewery across the street from the station. If I can see it from the platforms, you must be able to see the platfoms (and more?) from there.

Other than that, I don’t remember any particular bars/restarants I’ve seen from the train.

And your point is …???

The trains don’t cost me money to view.

It is hit and miss in Denver that time of the year. There is the possibility it could be a relatively warm and nice day, so you may want to hold out a little hope.

hmmmmmmmm… nope , still not getting it

In Wauwatosa, in Milwaukee county, Wisconsin there is a bar & grill called The Channcery on State street right along the Canadian Pacific (ex-MILW) main. There’s a great fully enclosed (smoke free) dining room with full view of the tracks only about 10 yards from the near rails! Amazingly there’s not much vibration when the trains pass either. Further east on State street is Saz’s a ribs and steaks place, quite good too but not as nice a view of the tracks. However the best I’ve seen in Milwaukee is the riverwalk in the Third Ward. There’s two bars, and three restaurants of varying price range all right across the river from the CP’s (again ex-MILW) high line and bridge approach to Milwaukee’s Amtrak Station. It’s a great place to have a beer in the beer city and watch the Chicago-Milwaukee traffic. Cheers! ~METRO

Any pub in the STATION SQUARE complex in Pittsburgh. The Sheraton there has the best breakfast bar with CSX (former PL&E) about 20 feet away.

Also, the IRON HORSE saloon in Ashland, VA. You are at the neck of the bottle of CSX (former RF&P) north-south route. Just don’t get too loaded…30 feet out the front door is the mainline.

I forgot a good one. There is a hotel in Akron built into the old quaker oats bin. The restaurant does not so much overlook the tracks, but talk about room loation. Seven stories up right over the three-track main. Man, talk about a great room.

Double main ex-MILW grade crossing on DuPlainville Road about 1.5 miles north of I-94. CN/WC diamond [Waukesha sub] is just east of the pub. Lines up behind center - checks left, check right! HUT HUT End Zone Sports Bar & Grill W226N3013 Duplainville Rd Waukesha, WI 53186 (262) 695-5300 Village of Pewaukee - squad cars not uncommon in the area. (Odd - no bakery nearby.) I’ve never stopped in - but if the pub grub matches the art in the windows - could be the home of a decent burger. Report says they have good pizza! The SILVER Chalet and its 3 siblings belong to QuadGrpahics -former Stainless Zephyr pieces spotted just north of Hwy 74 in Sussex. Directly east of the spur is the new location of Seigo’s Japanese restaurant. Old Templeton is also on the south side of 74 known as Main Street in booming Sussex.

The Norcross Depot, just northeast of Atlanta has reasonably priced (and really good) food, a bar with patio seating at one end, outdoor eating on one side, and the Norfolk Southern double track main into Atlanta. The bar patio (you can get food there too) has a better view of the trains. You get plenty of warning that a train is coming from the crossing gates at either end of the depot. Expect a train every 20-25 minutes, but sometimes you can get a several in succession. I will be there at least once for dinner next week. Going to try the week after too (I have 2 business trips there in September). I go every chance I get.

Aaargh! And I’ve been there a few times myself! I usually use it to sneak in some train watching when I’m in Milwaukee and we’re looking for a place to go out and have dinner & a few.

End Zone… [;)]

Try the bar/restaurant in Banff, Alberta, it’s in the baggage room of the train station 5 feet from the tracks, lots of drags on the C.P. main line,if you can’t see them you can sure hear and feel them grinding by.

Flossmoor, Illinois has the Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery in a 1906 Illinois Central Station right on the busy CN line south out of Chicago. In addition to CN trains, you’ll see a good mix of Metra electrics, Illinois Central, NS and Amtrak.

I’ve never visited so I cannot attest to views of the tracks.

(1) FoxHole (sports bar)…should call it Rat Hole (been there forever)

(2)WynKoop-NO (even if the mayor owns it)…Very little goes by the platforms anymore, the tracks are stubbed off to the south at Cherry Creek where ATSF ended at MP 733.6 (2 miles from the edge of the world as Chico knew it)

  • Try the Denver Chop House in the old UP Freighthouse & Commissary. Somebody ought to put an establishment near Utah Junction or 20th St/ 23rd St./ Prospect wye which are the busiest places in town.

How about out west? Davis, CA, a brewpub along the tracks, Jack London Square, with street running, in Oakland has several establishments. Fullerton station has a cafe, and a full service resturant in the ex-UP station. There must be a number of station restuarants around the USA. AA

How about coming to Cincinnati. One of the best is Glendale Pub, which sits along side of CSX line from Cincinnati to Lima, mile post 15. It’s mostly directional running here with NS. Traffic is mostly north bound with an occasional southbound coming off the CSX Indianapolis line or locals. There are 50+ trains a day past here. Here are some links to some pictures. Nice deck for viewing.[:D]
