Inclines or no iclines

hey guys had a question on my smallish 5x9 layout am i getter to with or with out an inclined section off track it’s gonna be a double mainline ive kind of got it figured out just a double mainline with a few spurs scattered around it. with a runnaround for switching the various spurs. thanks csx.

If you want something to go up and over, I think you have enough space. You could have some gentle rises if you wanted, having both tracks climb and decline together. The one thing that might add to the appearance would to have your spurs lower than the main, just a modest drop. Also, a spur could to up to some location above track level.

I think having inclines in your size layout is mostly your decision. It will add variety to the scene, whether it is worth it to you is the question.

Good luck,

Richard

If you want say 3" of seperation a lot of times I may go up 2" and down 1" or varioius combinations to get the seperation. For the tracks going overhead I have used bridges or some thin structure(below the track) to keep the incline low. I also sometimes don’t use cork under the track that is going underneath–again trying to keep the incline minimized. HO cork road bed is about 3/16s as I recall, so two of them is almost a half inch. At a 5% grade, 3 inches requires 60" of running and you can get a lot of that in the curves.

alright well my tthoughts were having the hole thing covered with 2 inch foam and one half up to four inches and the other 2 inches so it’d have to haul a long freight up the gradeto get to the industrys im trying to explain it as good as i can but that is the general thought’s

any thing i shoulo know on it how do i make an incline is now what i need to know so when im buyng stuff ill know how much to buy thanks csx.

You can buy Woodland Scenics 2% foam incline set that is flexible. I used them on my layout, no thinking required. HERE

Just don’t go steeper than a 2% grade. Most locomotives don’t have enough pulling power for steep inclines.

For my 3" separation on my crossover bridge, I went down into the foam base 1", and incline was up 2". For a 2% grade. I have some locomotives (an Athearn RTR) that can only pull 7 passengers cars up that grade.

And you don’t want any uncoupling areas (sidings/yards) on grades, or your cars will go bye bye.

One more note, replace all your locomotive and rolling stock couplers with Kadee couplers! (trust me).

thanks how man set’s of inclines will i need to do a 2perent grade on my layout. maybe four set’s will that do me to get what i want thanks csx.

Each set will get you a 3" incline. You want one for going up, one for going down. So unless you plan to have two separate inclines (you don’t have the room), all you need is two sets.

awesome thank you for the info on it ill get thsoe when i go to get the first round of track in the next few weeks im getting the stuff for the mainlines and turnouts for the mainlines and such thanks csx.
