Indentifying steam and diesel models or types or classes.

I was just wondering if there is a definitive web site that a person can use to identify steam and diesel locomotives. Many times I see a picture or a model that I flat cannot identify. You can buy books on the subject but what about online.

Steam I am somewhat comfortable with but diesels are another thing.

The only suggestion I would have is to type the designation (GP40-2, SD90MAC etc) in to your search field and see what pics come up. I don’t know of any site dedicated to IDing the different types.
Best I can do, sorry.

Hello GreenGoose1,

If you haven’t already, go to www.railpictures.net

You’ll will find “literally” thousands of pictures of locomotives. On the locomoitve box you can clip it open and select what type of locomotive you wi***o check out. You can also type in specific locomotivs in the Key Word box.

This is a really nice site and all of the photos are downloadable. I’ve got about 100 that I use for my wallpaper.

I’ve also had some success with www.trainweb.com as they’ve got a search facility specifically for train-related pages. I’d not heard of railpictures.net until now, though I’ll be checking it out now - sounds good!

Steam is going to be a lot harder to indentify. Nearly every road had their own modifications and details that to the trained eye are dead give aways but to the average person are just confusing.

Antoher resource is going to http://www.northeast.railfan.net, and looking under diesels and steam on the left side.
