India: A cross of everything

Has anyone tried modeling India
Ive always wanted to (though it is my homeland)

It has everything

Diesels, Electric, Steam[:)]

Mountains, Cities, Fields Towns, Villages, Bluffs[|)][|)]

railroadyoshi, You are certainly correct about India’s wide scope and variety of locos, rolling stock, etc. Just about anything can still be found in that vast Country. China also ran steam until very recently and I believe both countries have been over-looked by most Western modelers. Am I correct in assuming that much of India’s steam power was after English designs? If so, it wouldn’t surprise me if many British modelers would be building layouts in an Indian motiff. Certainly, there is no end to the varied landscapes in that fascinating Land. I can only think that U.S. modelers hesitate due to the shortage of English “prototype” steam locos, etc. Best of luck with your layout. Regards, Ted

Steam service is dwindling though
Id be more concerned about electric loco shortage
Engines like GP-9’s could easily be converted to look like Indian diesels

The last big Indian passenger locomotives were originally built by Baldwin and the Canadian Locomotive Company, and were streamlined 4-6-2 locomotives known as class WP. There is an article in a recent issue of the English magazine “Continental Modeller” describing the conversion of a Rivarossi streamlined NYC Hudson to a very convincing WP class. Warren Miller, who also has written articles on converting smaller steam (British style inside cylinder 0-6-0s) and overhead electric locomotives is an excellent modeller, but the technique is not that difficult.

I believe Kalmbach now distribute “Continental Modeller” in the USA. It has had a number of articles on Indian Railways. The Wartime built AWD and CWD Mikados were built in the USA (AWD) or Canada (CWD). These could be approximately represented by modified USRA Mikados, but you should start with a USRA with a boiler top headlight.
