Where can one get India ink? Hobby Lobby? Michaels? What area can it be found in also.
Is it like a thin paint/stain, never used it but wanted to try on some projects. What colors are good for model railroading?
Thanks for any info.

Look in the section with calligraphy pens, etc., at your local arts or hobby supply, such as those mentioned in previous post. India ink is black. Very black.
Craft store like Micheal’s,art supply stores, maybe a college bookstore.
India.
Sorry, that was too easy![swg] I get mine at Michaels.
Hobby Lobby, in the artist’s paint area.
I found it at a Staples office supply store.
Don’t forget to thin it A LOT with alcohol. I like to mix up different concentrations & see how each one works on certain objects. They also have brown & when used with a little red can give a rust effect. The black & brown can be used to “age” wood. Depending on what size bottle you use, try just a few drops in the alcohol first, you can always add more. I use rubbing alcohol available in any drug store or super market. Jerry
I just bought a bottle of India Ink at Hobby Lobby for about $6-$7. It is located in the art supply section with the paints and brushes. I didn’t expect it to be so expensive though.
A little goes a long way. You only need a teaspoon or less per pint of alcohol. India Ink is used in drafting and artwork for permanent outlining, etc. It doesn’t turn blue when thinned with alcohol.
Dave,
In India, ALL the ink is Indian…

A.C. Moore craft stores.
I get a version of this ink… its called kuro sumi ink. And man is it black!!!
North India or South India?
fwdguy must not have been paying any kind of attention because I stumble over this stuff almost every time I go into an Arts and Crafts store or an office supply store; I most recently ran into it in Staples!
You can find it at all of the above listed places, but for the price, Wal-Mart is hard to beat; in the crafts department.
Hi,
Like previous posters indicated, you can get it at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, various office supply stores, etc.
May I add… this stuff is strong, and it will stain pretty much anything, and it is permanent! A little goes a long way and and if it sounds like I speak from experience, I am!

Only in Canada we call it Back Bacon.
The hobby budget is suffering from red ink at this time, I will have to wait until next month to get the india ink when everything is back in the black fiscally =)
I get it at Pearl, Michaels, Blick, and Walmart. As others have posted, a little goes a LOOONG way. I use India ink mixed with alcohol as a wash along with washes of cheap artists acrylics and sometimes leather dye for staining and aging wood. The results are fantastic.
I use rubbing alcohol available in any drug store or super market.
By the way the other day I was in the market for some alcohol for just this purpose – diluting india ink. What I found is that there are brands of rubbing alcohol that are not just alcohol and water, but oils and other chemicals, including colors. Those are to be avoided.
