Would a store like Michaels have a suitable product like India Ink that would work that isnt quite as expensive like a sort of craft paint of some kind that can be thinned and diluted down?
I did a quick search on the Michaels website. They have a 2 oz bottle of Speedball India Ink. BUT … if you want good prices/qty goto Dick Blick … http://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-black-cat-waterproof-india-ink/ … they have a Quart of Black Cat Waterproof India Ink for $11.99 … which would last just about … forever
Hey Cedarwoodron, I like that avatar pic. Do you have a larger size we can see?
Waterproof wouldnt be good for staining wood though.
The only thing that ‘waterproof’ means is that something has been added to the ink … in the past it was shellac. As far as stain goes it doesn’t much matter when staining wood … you mix the Ink with alcohol anyway. You can use lots of things to stain with … basically you are suspending some kinda pigment in a solution. Alchhol is better then water because it doesn’t warp thin wood like water and it evaporates quickly. What’s more important … IMO … is the brand of Ink. Some inks will have a blue tint. Some brown. You can get, by the way, different color inks. I have some brown on a shelf. I personally for graying wood, have some Iron Buff I made up that works pretty well. Edit: If you were trying a weathering procedure where you wipe off some of the ink like someone mentioned earlier, then the waterproof ink might not come off as easily. You just gotta experiment a bit on scrap first in case it’s not what you wanted. Suggest you read this article … Staining wood … that’s from an expert and not one of the NOT-expert posting to this thread such as myself.
I guess my understanding is waterproof ink wont mix with alcohol. Thanks for that link. Great article and I went to the rustystumps website and there is a lot of great articles on this stuff they have. Very nice resourse.
