People interested in creative re-use of a railroad depot could consider the one in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, a small town west of Madison. The 1857 wooden structure (in its original location next to the tracks of the former Milwaukee Road) has been beautifully adapted for use as the public library. In recent summers it has been a centerpiece of the Gandy Dancer Festival, a traditional music event that highlights local history.

If you want to booster support for saving and relocating a 1912 railroad depot in good condition (which by this very description ought to be worthy on the spot), publishing a photo would help. For openers, is it brick or wood frame? Try moving a brick depot if you think it doesn’t matter. Please put a little backbone into it, Trains, and help these folks out. Things change and the depot “must be moved”. Okay and understood, but the preservation movement often seems to be a “day late and a dollar short”. Let’s get this one saved.

Here where I live in Davisburg Michigan, which was a stop on the Holly subdivision of Grand Trunk Western, back in the day, There was a small, simple gothic revival style depot. When the railroad quit using it, an enterprising local man purchased it, had it relocated about 2 miles away, and turned it into his home. It is still there today, sitting on a small hill. The terrace steps approaching the front door are manufactured out of old railroad ties. A little creativity can go a long way.

Like to know hat happened to the proposal to bring commuter rail back to Valparaiso. Was there an intention to restore it along the former Pennsy route where Amtrak’s “Calumet” last ran? If so, why not move the depot there? I recall the Broadway Limited called there as well.
