Great point Mr Shapp! I Totally agree.

Something tells me this won’t be the last extension.

I can see this going either way (better service for less cost or elimination). Let’s hope for the best. Of course, if Amtrak would make the Cardinal daily…

I commend Mr. Zier for wanting to make the NC Piedmont service the model to copy. But one thing the Piedmont trains and NCDOT do not have to contend with is a Chicago-like spaghetti-bowl at one end of the route. Unless and until the route through NW IN and the Chicago terminal is reconfigured to eliminate delays, these trains will never attain the stature that CHI-IND rightfully deserves.

WOW…funding for something else besides highways.

I have ridding the train 3 times since '05. I saw no delay and thought it was a very enjoyable ride. But 6am in Indy? Jeez…this should be a commuter route.

Why is Indiana alone being asked to fund the Hoosier State?

It serves Chicago better than it serves Indianapolis, in my opinion, considering the convenience of the arrival and departure times.

It also serves passengers arriving in Chicago on other trains, which it doesn’t do in Indianapolis.

Which city gets more tax revenue from riders to the train’s destinations for shopping, overnight stays, and sports and leisure activities? Chicago or Indianapolis? The answer is obvious unless you’re oblivious.

And, finally, given the availability of public transportation in the two cities, the odds are fewer Chicagoans have a car to drive as an option to get to Indianapolis than vice versa. So, which riders may be inconvenienced more if the Hoosier State doesn’t run?

Unfortunately, the current Chicago-Indianapolis route is the one Amtrak is stuck with due to poor track conditions throughout the state of Indiana. But to make this Indiana route truly a big success, it needs to serve Cincinnati, too. The Cardinal would be ideal to run as a night train on this route since it will provide the sleeper car service if multiple frequencies are ver established between Chicago and Cincinnati.

As long as Amtrak has " smiling Joe" as it’s president we will never see the will to fight congress for funding for new equipment much less decent service provided at a price that will continue to attract new riders.
It is ironic that the state that receives millions of dollars just from the fees and taxes payed by the Beech Grove employees wants to use another contractor to provide improved service.
