Industry question

Hi Guys

I remember reading a article in MR close to 10 years ago that talked about what shipments industries would receive and what they would ship as well as what freight cars would be used. But for the life of me I cant seem to find it, I have been looking through all of them for days now but no luck.

I know its a long shot but does anybody have a clue what issue that was in? any help would be great

Thanks

Jeremy

Jeremy,

Try the MR magazine search engine at this link.

Hope that helps…

Model Railroader has had DOZENS of articles about “what shipments industries would receive and what they would ship as well as what freight cars would be used.”

The current December 2010 issue has an article about commodities handled and cars used in the meat packing industry.

I believe the recent Milwaukee Beer Line series had an article about commodities handled and cars used on that line.

He’s probably thinking of the Metro Belt & Terminal layout plan from April 2001. Along with the track plan, the article included an industry matrix similar to this one from my layout.

I would also suggest checking out the NMRA’s Operations Special Interest Group (OpSIG). Their industries database is a comprehensive listing of on-line industries during several eras, and includes what each industry shipped in and out. From this, it’s easy to work out which car type would be used.

There’s also a separate section detailing what would be in/out for the ‘bigger’ industries, such as paper mills, etc.

Kalmbach’s three “Industries” paperback book series (three so far) should be helpful. Leastwise, they were for me.
