We all can only hope that the Kanadian Kourt system can deal with this travesty. So far there is no indication that it can. It took around a year to arrest the engineer and a couple others who were closely involved. This loco should have been, along with the others involved, put in a secured location and kept under lock and key until the court cases were final. Instead it had been handed back to the railroad, and was up for sale. Gee whiz folks, am I the only one who sees all the failure and legal breakdown here? If this were Zimbabwe, it would be one thing. But this is Canada with its Mounties (except in Quebec) who always get their man, and all that rot. Well, what I see here is rot, all right, in the whole justice system of Quebec.
I have been following this story for a year and four weeks so we drove up to Lac-Megantic to see the site for ourselves. The big town, located in beautiful country, has some heavy industry located on the edges.
Upon arriving we learned that we were not voyers as a landscapped memorial park has been built including a pavilian with forty-seven bells and blue ribbons is located next to the track.
The center of most of the town is big empty building foundations, nothing else. Do feel for all involved in this tragedy whether citizens, railroad personel, and first responders. They all will bear the scars for the rest of their lives.
