I found several brands of india ink on Amazon and Ebay. However they all seem to be marked waterproof. I thought india ink was supposed to be “watered-down” to stain wood and structures?

I use a brand called Speedball, I think I got it at a craft type store. They are all waterproof ,you thin it with alcohol ( 99% ) or close to that works best. There have been any number of articles with each author giving his or her mix. Try adding a little at a time til you get the look you want. Note mix well.
Check with art supply stores, and ask Calligraphers what brands they use (they use a lot) and ask where they purchase their inks.
