Inserting a photo in a post.

I took two photos at Eola this weekend with my cell phone camera and have them on my computer desktop…how do I insert them into a post I want to compose? Thanks.

Jim - I asked exactly the same questionhere a couple months ago. Courtesy of Larry/ tree68 and some others here, I finally figured out how to do it. Let me find that thread and I’ll post the link.

For now, know that you can’t do it directly from your computer to this site - the folks at Kalmbach apparently don’t want to have to buy and maintain the additional server and storage space that would be needed to host all of our photos. Also, the little icon above with the tree in it for ‘’[Insert/edit image]‘’ has never worked for me.

Therefore, and also, you need to be able to upload them to a server or photo-hosting service that’s on-line 24 x 7, such as - but by no means limited to, and in no pareticular order - RailPictures.net and others like it, Picasa by Google, Photobucket, Flickr, etc.

  • The bad news is that you’ll likely have to establish your own personal account with whichever one you select.

  • The good news is that is often free.

  • The bad news is that you then have to learn how their software operates, which can be cumbersome and frustrating, in my limited experience.

After that, it’s pretty simple - copy the URL for your photo from its site, type a little bit of code here which consists of 4 brackets, 6 letters, and a slash - details to follow later, and paste the photo’s URL in the middle of that code, click on the ‘’[Post]‘’ box, and you’re done !

Thanks for the information Paul, but frankly it looks a bit too complicated for me so I am going to pass. I wanted to share the photos form last Sunday as I was able to catch two Wheeling and Lake Erie units trailing a NS unit on a “junk” freight westbound (first time I’ve ever seen a W&LE unit anywhere) and I also caught the two leased Hudson Bay Railway units being used on the Illinois Railway (formerly Illinois Railnet) sand train into Eola every Sunday.

…It must be just protocol to set up a cumbersom system to insert a photo on this web site.

Frustrated too many times, don’t even think of trying since. {on here}. Send photos all over the country otherwise.

Jim, if you want to, you can e-mail them to me- I’ll upload them to my rrpicturearchives account and post them or links to them whereever you’d like.

[tup] There you go ! I was just going to suggest that as well, as Larry has offered to do that too a couple of times in the past.

Looking forward to seeing them !

  • Paul North.

Just sent you a PM. Thanks

Bada-bing, bada-boom.

Jim - Setting up on one of the photo sites isn’t all that hard, and once you do, you’ll have free reign to post pictures here, and to share them with others (like family).

Or, do as I did and buy a little server space from one of the many vendors that offer it. You can even get your own domain name and build your own website, if you’re so inclined. There will be a recurring cost, but it’s still neat to link to www.yourwebsite.com

In the meantime - nice shots!

Jim -

What’s the story on the Hudson Bay locos? I saw them in January when I went out to eat with my family at the Select Restaurant at 25 and Boulder Hill Pass. I couldn’t really get a good angle on them at the time, but I thought they were definately good looking locos. Are they tied into Illinois Railnet operations somehow?

Hudson Bay Railway and Illinois Railway are both part of the Omnitrax organization and IR is leasing or borrowing the HB units for a while (I think they have been on the IR property around here for about six months now but tend to be rather elusive to most of us). Yes, they are good looking and are rather clean as you can see…how long they stay that way is anybody’s guess.

You took picures of white boxes with red X’s? [:P] Or am I the only one who see that?[%-)]

It’s nowhere near as complicated as the first reply makes it sound.
