Insights, opinions, and comments: Atlas S2s

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to get your input on the Atlas S2 switchers.

  • How good are they - i.e. running and detailing?

  • How is the low speed? Are they noisy or quiet? A decent puller?

  • Were these the ones manufactuerd for Atlas by Roco?

  • Anything you didn’t really like about them?

  • DCC: Any of you using them with a decoder? Was the decoder installation straightforward?

Thanks for you comments ahead of time. [:)]

-Running - excellent, detailing - good
-excellent, not as quiet as Kato, decent puller, the Walthers’ FM switchers are better due to more wieght, they were also Roco.
-originally in Austria, later China.
-not too difficult, talk to Tony’s or Loy’s for specifics.

The TCS site has pictures of an S1 and S3 install, but the S2 is similar.

They should run very nicely, all the other Atlas/Roco units we have around here do. But the motor appear to not be fully isolated out of the box. I have a couple of FP7’s to do, other than space for the decoder, the S2 should be similar.

I just got my second one. The newer Chinese models are better IMO. My CB&Q is my favorite locomotive for sentimental reasons. Good low speed, especially now it has a decoder in it. Pulls well and is very quiet. The NCE ATLS4 decoder is designed as a drop in for the loco. It isn’t really a drop in, but the instructions are good and the information comes with it to convert the lights to LED. There is not a lot of room inside these, so the purpose designed NCE decoder is a good solution.
