install sound bachman j 4-8-4, run dc only

I like the way my bachman j performs and would like to do a sound install, for dc only. The club is dc only and no thoughts to dcc anytime soon. I’ve been reading and asking and listening and would like to order a decoder, speaker, etc and do it. Problem is I haven’t read a decoder manual yet that speaks of programming with dc only. My BLI locos naturally have instructions for dc programming. If I can find a decoder manufacturer with a manual with what I’m after it’d help tip my hand in their direction. No layout at home yet either, just the club. Your thoughts appreciated please. Thanks! Gary

A SoundTraxx Tsunami can run in DC mode, but no matter what you choose you’re not going to get very satisfactory sound with DC, because of the extremely limited number of functions available.

You can download the Tsunami decoder operator’s manual from the SoundTraxx web site.

thanks for the note. I was reading the Tsunami manual yesterday and I didn’t see anything about programming on dc only. hence my questions. I’m sure I’ll check through their manual again though. I might just have to quit being so stubborn and spring for a dcc unit and get going in that direction also. I’ve been reading lots about dcc sets of late so maybe it’s about time. Thanks again. Gary

You might want to check out this new announcement by MRC, appeared on Tony’s website today:

Black Box #0001050
Allows a non DCC user to control all of the sounds on his decoder equipped locomotive when using a DC power pack. It is a very simple hook up. It works for all brands of locomotives and decoders. Retail price: $72.98

The details under "buy MRC products says:

Works with your DC Power Pack to control MRC, QSI, MTH & ESU Sound-Equipped Locos & Decoders

Tony’s price is $55.95

All things considered, I think I’d recommend biting the bullet for a DCC starter system, like the NCE PowerCab, but this might be worth talking to Tony about. Odd that it doesn’t mention SoundTraxx, although I’m guessing that’s just an omission.

I’ll be darned. that’s neat. Been thinking though about might as well go the dcc route. thanks for all thoughts, might as well let this post slip on into old issues. Thanks again!
