Hi all,
I thought I might share with you my idea of interchangeable scenery to add fun to the hobby. When I was building my structures, I wanted them to be interchangeable as much as possible to help keep my layout alive with new scenes. With a bit of planning prior to construction, it proved to be simple and fun.
I constructed my cabins so that they are all removable from their platforms, thus allowing them to be repositioned around my layout. Here are a few shots of two cabins I swapped on one location.
Another area of a layout that could be interchangeable is the access hatches and I’ve got some new ideas for mine, and hope to build them sometime.
Spitwater Hotel - first cabin scene - three shots
Spitwater Hotel - second cabin scene - three shots (taken last night)
That is a nice idea. I have been considering making some small diorama scenes that could then just drop into the layout and be easily moved around. Do you have lighting in these? If so, how do you handle that?
Simon,
Yes my structures have lights that are wired through the house platform/decking. This part of the structure is not removable or interchangeable. Check out the link section of my web site for a few pictures of the decking and how the lights are done. The link is how to build a cabin.

Sounds like a great idea!

A great idea that could be implemented at many levels.
The entire layout could be built of “modulasr” that could be re-arranged or changed in and out.
On the “modules”, building could be mounted to allow them to be re-arranged or changed in and out.
This could allow the layout to represent various different eras at diffent times.
Have fun
