This guy thinks that’s a -8! I tried to ask if he accidentally listed it wrong and state that it was probably a -9 and here’s what he said:
“Hey GFY if you have a problem with this, you’re emailing the wrong person. Email Bachmann Industries with the same email that you sent me. I’m advertising the same thing that they have on their box. Because you think you’re a Mr. know it all, you should have known that. Keep your nose out of other peoples business.”
I’m not losing any sleep over this but thought that it was pretty rude.
cnw wrote “This guy thinks that’s a -8!” and he would be right! bachmann and atlas make the dash 8s only, not a dash 9. Athearn and kato make the 9s, but not 8s
It is confusing, because the engines are numbered incorrectly - the 8500 series were the Dash 8s, while the 8600 series were the Dash 9s. I asked Bachmann about thier ‘error’, but never received a response.
As for the asking price, I got one for $34 including shipping about 6 months ago, so that is really high.
Hey, CNW6000, what you ought to do is bid on the item, win it, and then you can post a comment about the seller, since you won the item. That way, you can tell everyone on eBay what a jerk he is and then maybe every other potential buyer will keep their nose out of his business.
It is not unusual for companies to paint/number one of their products to represent something that is close but not exact. The ad is not misleading as far as the product goes (-8 vs -9) and the seller can ask any price he wants. Remember it is buyer beware, on e-bay, the train show, or the hobby shop. You pay what you are comfortable paying.
All too often nuances get lost in emails. When we talk to someone face to face there are vocal inflections, body language and tone of voice to amplfy our meanings. The printed word lacks these modifiers unless the writer takes extra effort to put them in via his (or her) writing. Thus, the same words that would be inoffensive in person can come across as being rude in print - especially if it is from someone whom you don’t know.
Add to that the fact that not everybody who sell model trains is a ferroequinologist. To you and I it might be obvious that it is Dash 8-40CW with the wrong paint and or wrong road number, but to them it is (forgive me!) a toy train!
Yeah, his response sounds rude, but to him, perhaps your question came off as sounding rude and he was just returning tit-for-tat.
It certainly wouldn’t hurt to write him back and explain why you were confused about what it was he was selling and what you found out here. That way when some one else questions him about the engine, he will have a good answer for them instead of just having to tell them to “write to Bachman”.
I did contact the seller and apologize for intruding and that I was only trying to help, then he replied “Who gives a rat you’re a know it all and I know what I have.” I only posted this with the intent of saying I’m not going to buy from him and let everyone else make up their minds. As previously stated: it’s his horse and pony show, let him run it as he sees fit. I’d just buy elsewhere.
