Intermodal yard basics

Hey guys,

I’m currently in the works of getting Realistic Intermodal Operation, but just wanted to know what I should include in planning a small intermodal yard. Thanks!

I can’t help you, K/M but I’m in a similar position and second your request. [:D]

I third it.

The place to start will be to decide how you’ll load and unload the trailers and containers, if you’re going to use a straddle crane or piggypacker, for example. Then you need to allow the proper clearance for them with the track spacing to move them from rail to highway vehicles and vice versa.

Are you talking about a book from Kalmbach about Realistic Intermodal Operations? I don’t have that particular one, but the ones I have are great references from a modeller’s viewpoint.

Simple intermodal yard isnt so simple. On BNSF we drop trilers in Willow Springs and the containers go on to Corwith. But like posted you need to have spacing between tracks and asphalt or concrete covering the area where trucks and piggy packers work.

So the whole area should be cemented? And what would be realistic to use for loading/unloading piggyback cars? Thanks!

Hope this helps http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p225/me0001_photos/intermodalprimer.jpg

If you want pictures of the real thing:

Both of these would require a concrete pad area around the tracks.
