This is my best diesel runner that I have. I just used it to pull a CMX around the layout (with isopropyl alcohol) and now it has a whining noise when running alone (with the sound turned off).
Where should I first look for the source?
I have never had it apart and it has about 15 hours total time never pulling more than 7 cars or one CMX.
Does the shell come off easily?
This insert sheet came with a CN F9 that I bought earlier this year:

I hope this helps. I don’t know about the whining noise though.
Hi,
I would start by giving it a good lube job. My two most recent purchases, a Kato SD40-2, their latest run, ran a LOT slower then the rest of my Kato fleet. Took the shell off and applied white grease to the tower gears, light oil to the motor bushings, tower bearings and white grease into the gears underneath. Now it matches speeds.
The other engine was a GP40 by Atlas. It hade a lot of weird noises. Done the same as above and now also purrs like a kitten.
Hope it helps.
Frank
PS: Maybe a wire is rubbing a flywheel.
