Intermoutain AC-12 Problems

Does anyone know how to remove the AC-12 cab or get into the new engine to remove and replace the dull orange headlight???

We called Intermountain and they said no exploded sheet is available. There is no diagram in the box to show how to work on it. How do you work on this thing??

Even the low cost models let you know how to work on them.

I don’t like the fact you can’t work on this model and fix anything,

Cheers

Cazephyr,

Sorry, can’t help you on getting into the loco, but I do have a few questions about it.

1: Do the pumps ‘talk’?

2: What’s the top scale speed (more than 45mph, I hope)

3: Does it pull anything?

Hope you can get some answers. I know that on the old brass and rivarossi AC’s there were two screws on the frame right under the cab. Wonder if Intermountain put the same thing on theirs?

The model is light in overall weight and does not have traction tires and is unsprung. Any of your Akane’s or KTM’s should pull as much as two of these. That is a guess, but it is not a puller.

I believe the top scale speed is below 30 MPH because the gear ratio is very high. This engine is slow, which would be OK for over the Hill, but not on the flatlands.

The pumps are OK, but in HO, it is hard to get the sound correct with the small speakers even if it was recorded from a AC10 to AC 12 prototype. The one option is you can blow the whistle or the horn by using a function. This is a good looking model with hatches that open on the water portion of the tender and is highly detailed.

It is amazing Intermountain does not want to give out an exploded view of this model.

Considering all of the colors that LED’s are available in today, I cannot understand any one using the less than dim orange or yellow colored LED in a headlight position.

Sorry this is not a good report, but this model is a display shelve type item. It does looks good overall but I am not going to be use it.

Cheers

Anyone else out there that has the Intermountain Cab Forward and would like to know how to get the thing apart so the headlight LED can be replaced??.

Thanks

How much do these knick-knacks cost?

Thanks for the information. I had been on travel to Denver and just got home tonight. After I read the post about the AC-12 and all the problems with wheel gauge and top speed, I can’t figure out what Intermountain was thinking. Top speed of less than 30 mph and the motor noise can be heard above the sound when the speed is over 15mph or so. The gear ratio is certainly good for switching, but Cab Forwards should have a top speed of fifty or so just to make it look great on the Overland. ( # 27)

At least, I know how to take it apart and replace the LED’s, but that is not important now since I am not going to use it.

I paid about $314 for the one I have, but I am not sure of the list price.

It is a nice looking well detailed model. I am not so sure about the steam dome height. When I compare it to pictures or the Key or Overland model, there is a difference.
