Does anyone know of a computer program that helps keep inventory straight? I remember there was one a couple of years ago, but have changed computers and mine died with the 'puter.
Its pretty easy to use Excel/Spreadsheet for this purpose if you are on a PC
[#welcome] to the forums!
If you have the program, a database such as Access is a great way of keeping track of your inventory.

I have an address of someone on ebay who says they have software for it. There are several at this address:http://toys.search.ebay.com/model-train-software_HO-Scale_W0QQbsZSearchQQcatrefZC6QQfclZ1QQfgtpZQQfposZQ5AIPQ2fPostalQQfromZR2QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ12QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQlopgZQQsacatZ19128QQsadisZ200QQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ2QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZunknown
It’s a little long but should get you done!!
Here is a link to a shareware program called “Yard Office”. The programmer posted the link here a few weeks ago and I tried it. I don’t have a lot of rolling stock so my experience may be different from others but it worked for me.
I should include the link http://www.musicmixradio.com/yardoffice/index.htm
I use Frostbow Home Inventory 4 for ALL my collections. Frostbow collection manager is good as well, and both are pretty cheap.

You can search for freeware on the internet. I found three different train inventory programs on one site alone.
I’m in the process of finishing one. Once I have all the kinks worked out, I can share it with you if you like. Though I havn’t regression tested it lately, I believe all the major features work.
Nevertheless, there are a few features I want to add before I think it would be ready for prime time. I could probably make a special build for you if you’re seriously interested in it.

I agree with Excel’s spreadsheet capability. It has some advantages:
(a) Price – usually provided with Windows
(b) Ease of use – simple to learn, simple to use
(c) Readily backed up to diskette
I use it for my own RR inventory, which is much larger than I realized when I
first got into it. Inventories of hobby items (and for all significant household
items) are essential if you should ever have a serious insurance claim.
Insurance companies are not interested in specifics, but they may balk at
some of the prices we pay for quality equipment.
Enjoy the weekend, everyone.

Excell has been mentioned a couple of times and there is a stripped down version of it in MS Works.
That works just as well or the database program in MS Works.
If you want to use a spreadsheet, try Open Office - it’s free and not M$. (www.openoffice.org)

For years now I have used Excel and it has worked well for me.
It may not be as fancy as the specific train inventory programs available, but it does the same job.

Mi Trains from shenware has a good list of features, includes the Microtrains cars (handy for N scalers), and integrates with shenware’s Waybills program to print car cards
