Not sure how the article gets 3 nearby interstates. I see I-35 going north and south. 30 some miles north of Manly, using US-65 to get there, is I-90. That’s all the interstates until I-380 96 miles away at Cedar Rapids, IA, I-80 125 miles south at Ankeny, IA and I-494 119 miles north at Bloomington, MN. US-20, US-30, and SR-27 are not interstates. Way too many at grade intersections and some of those curves will put you in the ditch if you even think about taking them at interstate highway speeds. More often than not, the shoulders are gravel, which is not interstate standard. But don’t take this the wrong way. Even with the at grade intersections and gravel shoulders, those routes are still 100 times better than any road east of Ohio, south of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River, or anything on the west coast.
Dan Sabin hard at work. It is not that bad of a location for a railhead. He also was a station agent for Rock Island there.
Jeffrey-- your map skills need some more work, N-S I-35 is 7 miles west of Manly. I-380 is a branch of I-80 from Iowa City, changing status to State hwy 27 at Waterloo but built to interstate stds but with several at grade interesections, joining I-35 South of Mason City 9 miles S of Manly. One you overlooked was E-W I-90 just north of Albert Lea MN 34 mi on IA-9 and I-35 N.
I’m in CF Ia.
Would be nice to see this yard happen. The transload facility for wind generators sits idle. What better than a intermodal facility. Not to mention, an economic boost to the area.
