Is a TMCC Command base still needed with DCS to run Tmcc?

I have heard that since the new upgrade to 4.01 you could now run tmcc engines with the dcs system, but hasnt this always been true with the use of a tmcc base? My question is: Does the new upgrade allow you to run tmcc engines with out having a tmcc base? I am ready to buy a dcs system and have tmcc engines, do I need anyting else to run my lionel engines? Thank you.

DCS works strictly as an emulator (albeit incomplete) of the TMCC system. No command base= no control of TMCC with the DCS handheld. This was true in the past and is still true. You could always control basic locomotive functions with a DCS handheld and and a TMCC command base. Now you can do a few more of the locomotive functions that were missing in the initial implementation in 2002, such as locomotive consists (lashups).
