Is Anyone A Fan Of The 4449?

Is Anyone A Fan Of The 4449? Does anyone have any photos? This is just a discussion about the Southern Pacific #4449 only!

Well I’ve logged over 2000 miles chaseing her. If that don’t qualify I don’t know what does. Don’t have any digital pix to share though.

Is anyone not a fan of 4449? Unfortunately fanning her is pretty much out of the question for me most of the time. I’ve never seen the locomotive in person.

Yeah, show me a railfan, and I’ll show you a person who likes the 4449!

Me luv hur velee much.

Does the sun shne in the daytime? Is this a railroad forum? Does Mookie like chocolate?Does a bear…

…is the pope catholic, is Luxembourg small, and do bears sha-la-la-la, in the woods.
Is the bible fiction is true love a contradiction and do bears sha-la-la-la, in the woods,

It was 20 miles from me…in 1976 on the Mo-Pac…somebody got pix of her on the way up here south of Newport, Arkansas.

I’ve seen 4449 twice, 1991 & 1999 @ Railfair.

With all the fans of 4449 out there you’d think there’d be more people trying to get her sister 4460 restored. Even though it never was a true Daylight you could always turn it into one.

Where is 4460? St. Louis?

4449 was the first live, mainline steam locomotive I had ever seen up close. In the years 1975 and 1976 my Dad was chairman of the Sioux Falls Bicentennial Commission and was responsible for bringing 4449 and the American Freedom Train to Sioux Falls.

When the 4449 blasted out of town bound for Canton, South Dakota, her engineer, Doyle McCormack had treated my Dad to a cab ride, which truly must have been a thril!
While I have never been a Southern Pacific fan, I think we are extremely fortunate that 4449 was restored to operating condition. And weighing in at well over 400,000 pounds, she is an awsomely beautiful piece of machinery.

I rode behind her in May of 2001 over Stampede Pass. Sadly she was still in black then, but man is she a beautiful engine. I got to see the 3985 live for the first time recently as well, and I would take the 4449 any day. I hope she runs down to eugene some time soon!

Yeah. It’s been there since '58 I think.

Greetings,

I had the chance to see SP #4449 for the first time this past summer when it ran with SP&S #700 on a doubleheader for the NRHS Convention in Portland, OR.

What a beautiful locomotive, Also according the #4449 webpage the #4449 will be steamed up this December for some “Polar Express” Christmas trips.

C U ALL L8TER!!!

This looks to me like it was taken from the small wooden overpass in Home Valley. And behind where you were standing is where the Portland section of the Empire Builder derailed a few months back. And just on the other side of SR14 is the cable head end for the cable co. I used to work for.

Ok, I thought so, it looks great without it’s shrouds and things, wouldn’t have to be a daylight to look GREAT leading a train. BUT, being the Missouri kid I am, I wi***hey would return Frisco 1522 to service, which is restored, and sitting idle a few tracks over.

Chad,

That photo was taken from the Hwy 14 bridge. I just pulled over and set up and shot it. There was no one else there. I thought according to my GPS markings it was near North Bonneville.
