Is it me or is this server slow?

For the last few days I have found the pages on this site/forum take longer than usual to load.

Is anybody else experiencing the same?

Hi Craig,

I had some problems getting into the site a couple of days ago, seemed like it was down as I had no problems surfing anywhere else, but it’s working fine now.

Cheers,

Warren

I had my issues with this site about 2 or 3 weeks ago. It was that bad that the page would time out.

I have to constantly hit the refresh button to get past the first post in a thread, and sometimes I just give up after the sixth or seventh time and go back to the post later. I couldn’t get the “cover my turntable” post this afternoon, and it took 4 or 5 “refresh” hits to get it now[:(!] Tonight even the “smileys” are slow loading!![}:)][censored]

Edit: It takes forever after hitting the post for it to go!! And I have a DSL!![tdn][tdn][soapbox]

I have cable modem and use tabs for opening posts. Sometimes they time out and sometimes they dont load at all. The other morning it said this page can not be found. Yes the server is slower than most others. Ever since the change this forum is getting worse. I cant use copy/paste and no matter how I try I cant post pics and links. I have tried IE, Mozila, and Netscape as browsers and all the same results.

Okay, so it’s not me, which is good and bad at the same time.

Think I’ll pass this tidbit on to the folks at MR.

No problems here. [%-)]

I’ve had no problems.

This wonderful internet has so many connections and pathways between anyone’s browser and the server–the issue could be anywhere in between.

It also could be time to clean out unneccesary temporary files on your computer. Sometimes a system reboot will also speed performance.

I’ve got several (very powerful) machines and each only seems to have a problem with this site and only in the past week or so.

Besides the whole point of the internet is to route around problems.

Occasionally I have a problem with a tab timing out. I just click the ‘Try again’ button and I usually get in.

It pops right up for me everytime. Though the point of the internet is to route around problems, there still are occasional fiber outages that can affect local ISPs, etc. Locally here, a few weeks ago, a fiber company that served several ISPs went out, and there was similar effect for some with just certain servers, but it was not universal.

I don’t pretend to be an expert on much of anything, but I do provide tech support for a web hosting firm, and would not have offered any suggestion if I didn’t think it was useful information.

I’ve been haing problems the last week or so. I thought it was me.

It has been working okay for me. Several times each week, though, I’ll go to post a reply and the green bars count up to two or three and then hang up until I get a “web page no longer available”. I don’t get that at any other forums.

Sometimes I find it’s slow and it takes a while for me to log in. Usually it’s fine.

Yep. Mine too for the last 2 weeks. A few days ago I was getting those “Post Not Found” error screens.

The problem I’m having is that I’ve got to keep refreshing the main page to get the newer posts and topics up

Same prob. I have to do it to every page to read posts not on the first page, then again when I get to the topic.

Mine pops right up. A SLOW day is when it takes 3 or 4 seconds. I have never had it time out.

Several Internet providers have recently been accused of slowing down heavy users selectively to reduce the load, and I personally suspect that providers who offer tiered service with different speeds probably mess with the cheaper tiers as an incentive to upgrade.

yeah, because the pages don’t refresh automatically (If i’m understanding your complaint correctly).

As for the “slowness”, it used to be much worse. could click on a link and wait 10+ seconds for it to start moving… and I have 100mbit pipe to the world (seriously - I’m at university right now). You also have to take into account that MRR is one sub forum of a much larger forum. I’ve rarely seen less than 75-80 users on at one time, many times much more than that.

Lets assume that they ALL are using DSL or cable, and tabbed browsers. 5 pages per user is roughly 400 pages that ther server has to send out (assuming we’re all looking for new threads to read at the same time).

So, yes - I agree that these forums are somewhat slow at times, but we give the server running them a beating…

As far as the 'net routing around problems – yep, it does that, but only after a “problem” is identified. Can’t route around what you don’t know about. Also, the “problem” link can be your connection to your ISP, or Kalmbach’s connection to theirs. If that is the case, there’s no routing protocols that will help…
