Hi everybody I need to know if KATO or Athearn gensis runs better. We hate putting on the pieces to the engine on the KATO engines but Athearn Gensis has the pieces on the already but I’m not sure which works more reliably. Please give me the info when you get this subject on your screen.
What’s Athern?
Great thing about putting the bits on… you can add light or heavy weathering first. When the bits are on you have to work around them or take them off first.
From what I’ve seen, Athearn RTR and Kato are about on par. Even the Kato SD70MACs and SD80MACs growl and whine (atleast mine do) and the Athearn RTR don’t growl as much, but you can really hear the shaft turning. They have about the same level of detail, although Kato’s have more add-on parts and the paint isn’t as great on the Athearn RTR. Athearn Genesis detail-wise kicks the crap out of Kato, but some of the older Genesis locomotives (the first run of SD70s, the 2-8-2 Mikado and the 4-6-2 Pacific) had issues. From what I’ve seen from the new Genesis SD70MACs, SD70s and F units, you get what you pay for. So it really comes down to what you want.
