I have not been up to the Twin Cities in the past few months, but I suspect the terminal at Shoreham is still in operation. The old ex-Milw terminal(old yard) north of the big hump yard at Pig’s Eye was closed years ago. Where else could they load/unload containers or trailers.
The current intermodal schedule shows a cutoff of 4 PM in Mpls with delivery in Chicago the next afternoon. Here is the current schedule:
Shoreham is in full operation trains 198 and 199 are now handling the traffic in monster trains They both stop and s/o and p/u also train 292 s/o. Several near 10,000 foot trains thru Glenwood this past week.
Unless they added new sidings since I last worked the Minnesota desk, there isn’t a siding that will hold them between Humboldt and Glenwood. Glad I’m retired.
Dickinson Siding, just west of Buffalo, MN is the longest siding on the Paynesville Sub. at 9200’. West of Glenwood, MN is a bigger problem as all the sidings are in the 7800’ range. It is only east of St. Paul, MN that you find sidings in the 10 to 11,000’ range. With CP finally reported to be ready to install CTC beginning this year between Glenwood, MN and Pasqua, SK it will be interesting to see if they lengthen sidinggs also.
I kinda found some things that the Hunter likes, and dislikes. If there are any more, please feel free to list them…
LIKES:
Long trains (He did the same thing with CN, not to mention lengthening sidings on the EJ&E once he acquired them)
Modern CTC equipment (Since he installed CTC on the entire Waukesha Sub to FonDuLac)
Restructuring the railroads operations by acquiring other railroads (rumoe has it that CP is looking to buy the IHB in order to turn Bensenville Yard a full IMF. It may sound impossible, but anything is possible with this man…)
Dislikes:
Old locomotives (he scrapped as many many old EMD locomotives, like the WC SD45s before retiring from the CN, and will get rid of the GP38s and SD40s on the CP once the ECOs are all delivered)
Short-haul intermodal (He killed the loading terminal in Green Bay when the CN purchased the WC, and has vacated Milwaukees intermodal terminal as the CEO of CP)
He has an assigned mission to bring CP to the point that it is a good return on investment for the shareholders. While we as railfans may miss a lot of the ‘old’ CP/SOO/MILW, like any business it must evolve
