I have 3 MTH engines, a Blue Comet, a Shay, and a Climax. Should there always be smoke fluid in them even when the smoke unit is not being used? Also, are all three of those filled through the smoke stacks? Thanks to all, Jake
I like to keep fluid in my steamers that are on the layout, even if they aren’t being run. That way, they are ready to run when I want too. The ones in storage i keep dry. As far as I know, all steamers from all the companies are filled thru the stack.
No law says you have to keep fluid in the smoke unit but it sure is the safe thing to do. You can’t be sure the off switch won’t get moved. I put a few drops in the ones I am going to put away and also after I have used them. As far as I know todays engines all get fluid down the stack, good idea to turn engine off when filling so the fan does not blow fluid out onto the engine.
My MTH engine manual says it is best to keep a few drops in to keep the wick from drying out if you store the locomotive for a long time without use.
