Is this a GP-??

I was given this loco in the mid '80’s and have recently taken it out to test the track on my new layout. I have looked repeatedly in my Diesel Locomotives Cyclopedia and cannot find a loco that looks like this one. I don’t know the mfg. The only info I find on it is stamped on the bottom of the fuel tank “Made in Yugoslavia”. The body/frame is plastic and all wheels have electrical pick ups.

Here’s the picture I took: http://members.cox.net/dbhuff/images/up_emd.jpg

Is it an EMD GP, if so, GP- what?. My layout is modeled in the early '50’s and was wondering if this loco is of this era.

That is an old Mehano/AHM GP18. Appropriate from the ate fifties onward.

These weren’t great runners even when new. Unless it’s got special sentimental value, I’d try to scare up one of the nice GP7’s made by Atlas or Proto 2000. Both can be found for a reasonable price, especially the earlier Atlas version in the yellow box.

Yeah, GP18.

It’s too late for your railroad (GP18’s were made between 1959 and 1964) and as the loco sin’t the worlds best runner, you’d do better to pick up a newer version of a GP7 or 9 (or an RS3) which would be appropriate for your era, and will look and run better than that old AHM unit.

A -18 huh? Thanks for the info. None of the -18’s in my book look like this one. What threw me off is all the -18 pics in the book have 3 or more fan shrouds.

I did want to get a GP-7 in ATSF black/white “Zebra Stripes” once the layout is to the point I can run some consists.

I am using this -18 with no consist to test newly installed track. Sorta like having lower rank enlisted guys march through an area to see if there are any land mines [:)]

Hmmmm, guess UP is good for sumpin’. [:D]

Santa Fe all the way!

The third fan would be in the middle of the hood - it’s the cooling fan for the dynamic brake resistors, an optional feature on the real thing that not all locomotives had.

It gets worse - many GP18’s got the short hood lowered, and some came from EMD that way too!

Confused yet? [:D]

Let’s not get carried away here…[;)][:D]
