I am curious where it can be bought. I found some paint brush & roller cleaner at a hardware store which has a mix of Xylene (746gm/lt) & Isopropyl Alcohol (44gm/lt). There doesn’t seem to be much Isopropyl Alcohol, mainly Xylene, would this be suitable for paint removal & washes for weathering?
Isopropyl alcohol should be available at any Drug Store. Personally, I wouldn’t go near any product containing xylene - an organic solvent absorbed through the skin and connected to all sorts of medical probems.
As was posted, it should be available in any drugstore. I use the 91% mixture as opposed to the 70% one which is “rubbing alcohol” although both types should work well.
Plain old Rubbing Alcohol can be be found in most grocery stores (drug aisle) and hardware stores as well, not to mention Mall Wart, Home Cheapo, and most other big boxes. I bought my last supply at BJ’s I believe. AND STAY AWAY FROM THAT OTHER STUFF! We want you around here for a long time…[;)]
I managed to find some in a chemist here in Hamilton (NZ). I think it was about $3.50 for 50 ml, or they could get a 500 mL bottle for about $10. I did have to try several chemists first though, so I’d suggest ringing a few first to try and find some.
There is some debate about this product in Canada, apparently it is used for making drugs, and drug stores can only sell very small amounts of 70% only, you cannot buy large quantities of it and I don’t think you can buy the 91% either.
Indeed some people use it illegally. Not too long ago I purchased 2-500 ML bottles of 99% from Walmart in Regina…for non illicit purposes I might add! [:)]
Wow, man my hats off to you all north of the border! all the cold and snow ( not that we aren’t haveing our fun with that down here in southwest Michigan to !) and now you guys can’t even get decent rubbing alcohol with out raising eyebrows!, and of course it’s probably not doing a thing to slow down the bad use at all, just makeing it hard for the honest folk to get, and BlueHillsCPR just noticed your signiture, nice, maybe we should palavar some time, water for your crops sir.
Try buying a 30 bottle case of the stuff with out needing to show ID[sigh], explain the purpose,[%-)] explain in detail your family tree[|(], AND with out describing in detail the tread pattern on your favorite shoes[|(]…at the local pharmacy…in south central PA…in the USA[banghead]
Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated looks like it’s available at Dick Smiths so I’m in business, well done Kevin there is one not too far from me.
I bought some from a chemist many years ago to clean tape deck heads, they were looking at me sideways and it wasn’t cheap! I was hoping to avoid having to do that again.
Geez…I can walk into most any drugstore here and easily purchase 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. Well, at least one bottle of it. As mentioned above, it is also known as Isopropanol and rubbing alcohol (70% Iso ROH) and it runs me about $1.75 for one pint or 473ml.
But please stay away from xylene, it is very harmful to your health and is one (of many) contaminants in gasoline.
