I find it interesting how, year after year, when Labor day is over and the cool weather starts to sit in, that the trains resume their place in our hearts.
Yesterday, I put a postwar Lionel 675 steamer in front of a string of Madison cars and watched the little bugger spin her wheels and smoke up a storm as she gained traction and got those Madison cars rolling.
I live in the southwest desert, where we have had a string of about 3 weeks where the temperature has hovered around 110 degrees. So when the temperature dropped to the 80’s, it is cool to us.
I would love to just be able to make a small layout, No room for such a thing here. I have a few options but none are in the imediate future more like 3 - 4 years down the road.
My layouts have all been small. I recently downsized from a 6’x8’ with rather complex wiring to a much simpler 4’x8’ layout. I actually enjoy the layout more. I enjoy seeing the very large layouts on DVD, but I prefer the smaller layouts for myself.
We recently sold our house and are living temporarily in an apartment for a few weeks now . The trains and everything on the layout are in storage. Hoping to secure a new property to our liking in the next 3 weeks. Hoping to be in a new home by Thanksgiving. Hoping to have at least a loop or two of track up in time for Christmas. Doing a lot of hoping! LOL
A little different this year with the down-sizing but generally after Labor Day we would begin to notice “all that accumulated dust” on the layout…but then, we’re probably the only ones who have a dusty layout.
It’s the table on which your trains run and under which your “kids” (even those who have left the nest) store bins (containers that you have to move before you can get to the wiring) full of their “save-it” stuff. [;)]
Not a “true” layout unless the items stored under the table rip out all the wiring you worked so hard on upside down under the table for umpteen hours until your arms ached so bad you could hardly raise them! [swg]
I ran our trains some last month when it got cool. As soon as I did the temps went into the 90s. For some reason September has been August and August was September??? [(-D]
Could be even stranger. I remember when I was a kid in the mid-60’s one year when the temperature at Christmas was in the 70’s and at Easter it was in the low 30’s, plus it snowed.
Yep, that year we had Easter at Christmas and Christmas at Easter! One of the priests at the church we used to attend had a great sense of humor, he played a Christmas bells record on the church loadspeaker system!
