I think it began when an uncle gave my brother Tommy and me a copy of The Modern Wonder Book of Trains and Railroading at Christmas, 1948(?) Two and a half years later, he and I took a trip by train from Charlotte to New Orleans to Chattanooga and back to Charlotte by ourselves. After that, I began making a pest of myself at the local station–and I visited the same agent after he had been moved, twice, to other stations on the same division.
