I've had it with HO, I'm switching to G!(photo intensive)

I’ve decided to scrap my HO layout in favor of a more realistic G scale setup. With doing this, I’ve gained sound! I can even use trees from my back yard! I have a tunnel(coffee table), and snow covered grasslands(frieze carpet). I even have a lake(tree stand)! What do you guys think? Is my tree to scale? The best part is being able to have my trains in the living room!

Corey,

G-scale is pretty cool but I have to disagree with a coupel of your conclusions. You don’t “gain sound” by going to G. It’s already in HO scale so you haven’t “gained” anything. Also, from my observations, G-scale is generally less “realistic” than HO and more expensive.

Even so, the larger size is fun - especially seeing it go around the Christmas tree.

Tom…

I think he’s pulling our leg…

But, seriously, Corey, that tree is about 200 G scale feet too high! Other than that, that looks very prototypical.

[(-D] enough said.

shm:

The idea has merit, but I can’t follow suit, as my sound system isn’t up to the task. See, I’d have to make the “chuff chuff” sounds 16x louder to stay in scale, and I’d end up wearing my voice out…

Thanks, Dave. Looks like I got royally “snookered”. [:I] Good one, Corey! [(-D]

Tom

Giant Redwood? [:D]

[I think he’s pulling our leg…]

***You sure about that Dave? [(-D] Gee, now perhaps it’s time for me to give up on N scale and dig out my own old Christmas train. Not sure where to put it, as we will not have a tree this year. Perhaps it could run around the coffee table. That would look even less to scale than Corey’s tree though. [:D]

Oh, I’m quite serious![:D] How many people have a live tree on their layout? My scenery(tree) was only $15 at Menards! You can’t beat that. I wonder how much Woodland Scenics would charge for a pre-made tree like this? I asked my wife if I could buy extra track at the LHS. Then I could have a long main line. I told her I would build her a ramp over the track so she wouldn’t have to worry about tripping. She said I was crazy! Do I sound crazy to you?!

Besides, the sound doesn’t scale properly. In HO it would travel at the speed of sound for HO scale, but if you introduce G scale, the physics of the sound has to change. It has to slow down to cover the same scale distance.

Do you think I’m kidding? [8)]

CCCCCHHHHHHOOOOOO CCCCCHHHHHHHOOOOOO!

Thats a really cool christmas set. Thanx for the pictures.

Thats a funny observation about the tree. If Woodland Scenics made a tree that size it would cost you $1000. They have to digest about 2 or 3 couches just for the ground foam.[:)]

Although I still do a little modeling in On30, I’ve been concentrating on Large Scale more and more and On30 less and less. I model narrow gauge G scale indoors from a model railroader’s perspective so I take advantage of the great detailing that’s possible in that size - and you can see the details with the unaided eye. I love scratchbuilding and find it MUCH easier to work on than the latter - and it’s easier to use the many common items from dollar stores and arts and craft stores. Yes, it takes up mucho space but I concentrate on superdetailing individual scenes, rolling stock, and structures. As far as costs, I fing it costs no more and sometimes less than the high-end HO equipment (non-brass), Granted, I’m doing it in a very small (for G scale) space, use small locos, and don’t need much track. I’ve also started a Gn15 mining/industrial line which is G scale on HO track - the adva

You my friend are in serious need of professional help. But before you hurt yourself and the HO gear please leave it with a friend… Friend[:D]

The white coat is soothing so don’t be afraid, Now walk away from the G scale… It’s evil.

I’m hoping to be home in time to set up the Christmas Tree layout, C’mon crew change!

What’s really funny, is this is what got me thinking about modeling again. My father in-law has an O scale train for his tree. I found myself watching it go in circles and started thinking about my old trains. My wife saw how much I enjoyed the train and bought me this one the following Christmas. That was two years ago. Last year around January, I decided to unpack my old HO equipment to see what kind of shape it was in. I hadn’t laid eyes on it for seventeen years. Shorty after that, I found this and another forum that further peeked my interest. Now I’ve gone full steam ahead and it’s all my wife’s fault!

I have heard from several people now that they pulled out their trains for someone else (a nephew, or son), or just saw a train set somewhere and then decided to pull out their old trains. I did the same thing myself a few months ago for my nephew and then realized how much I enjoyed MRR’ing. Maybe if more trains were displayed out there in the world we could gain some new modelers. I think as long as there are boys being borne out there then the hobby will be fine.

Smitty, I agree with you 100%. My father in-law with the tree train has an American Flyer set from when he was a boy. I got him to pull it out of the box a few weekends ago. He still has the boxes and tissue paper. We had a great time just looking at it. He looked like a kid on Christmas when he opened it. It’s ironic that his train led to my train, which led to my layout. Now I’m trying to get him back into trains. He’s the one family member that shows a real interest in my Modeling. If it weren’t for his Christmas train, my old trains would probably still be in boxes.

It’s a model of a mutulated Sequoia that was decorated by 10 hippies riding inside a VW Bus that had the exhaust leaking in to the passenger compartment! “Heyyyy! I feel weird man! Let’s decorate!”

Oh? G-scale is good--------- if it comes from Accucraft, USA Trains, Aristo Craft, but Lionel and LGB makes me want to sceam and pull my hair out!!![soapbox][:(!]

But I know someone who has the most scale G scale layout I have ever seen.- All steam and no diesel(except anyone who brings their own, and when I was there-a battery operated GP-7/9 was running)[#ditto]

Do those have the new Kadee Xmas couplers?[:-^]
