I don’t know if 7mph running with a diesel attached will attract that many railfans. Hopefully the slow speed and diesel escort will just be for teething out the new operation.
Googling will get you some important missing details. The locomotive is operated on compressed air via a
battery-operated compressor in the tender, hence the 7 mph operation. Runs about an hour on a charge.
A smoke generator is in the firebox. Operation is suprisingly realistic. The folks operating the locomotive
hope to eventually restore and operate it on steam. They periodically host “steam experiences”, running
the locomotive, turning on the manual turntable (visitors are invited to assist), cab visits, blow the whistle,
lots of photo ops, etc. I was there on a railfan tour in 2008, along with a school group (ideal target
demographic!) and we all had a great time. The adjacent 1930 depot has historical exhibits and sells
souvenirs. Was really worth the visit.
Chuck Amstein
There are a couple things that you mentioned Charles F Amstein. That I strongly disagree. The first it that this locomotive in particular HAS NO TENDER as you states it does. Second. It is under steam. And that the boiler was tested and passed. Third. The diesel is probably going to be used for dynamic branding. Don’t,t always,s believe the internet.
Sorry I ment dynamic brakeing
I’m impressed that it survived WW2 and has been preserved. Now that’s just cool. Great that they can operate it with compressed.
Seeing as how there was no photo of the engine provided, here it is online (note what looks like a Nathan 5-chime whistle, US-style). http://www.wikiwand.com/en/JNR_Class_C12
