Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner - April 2015

This place looks empty this morning!

Lunchtime!

I´ll be having a stack of Petra´s award winning pancakes today - yummy!

It´s sn*wing!

No sign of Spring for the Easter holidays [sigh]

This year´s egg hunt will be covered in that fluffy, white & wet stuff - most unusual for this area!

Janie, a cup of coffee will have to do this time - Petra is calling me for lunch.

CUL, folks!

well, I certainly slept last night! Daisy! One of those delicious walnut-loaded chocolate fudge frosted brownies {that I baked yesterday!}!

Good Morning

Got to get to the hospital today to pick up friend and get him home…we’ll find out when he will be released from

…I mean hospital [whew…that was close]

Then see about picking up a few Easter goodies for our Easter Egg hunt on Good Friday here

Here we will get to 55-60F…of course in the rain…tomorrow’s high a little lower…

Chloe…I’ll have a breakfast bagel and a coffee please…noooo!!! not the 30lb one…the normal sized one! …why are we getting dry ice in our coffee now?

Good morning.

Ulrich … I’ll have some of Petra’s awrd winning pancakes. Normally, I have German style panacakes topped with powedered sugar and lemon.

Barry … I’m glad your friend can go home, and I hope that means he will be improving.

Galaxy … A few days ago you mentioned the B&O railroad museum. Now I recall when I was there. It was the 175th Anniversary of the B&O Railroad in 2002. When there, I purchased a travel bag from the gift shop which is supposed to be a replica of the overnight bags used by train crews. The bag has the B&O logo with the capitol dome. I actually use the bag for short trips of one or two nights.

We’re getting ready for Easter weekend company. Two of our adult kids are coming with their spouses and with our grandchildren. I just made "Grandpa’s bunny rabbit game. (Something I used to do with kids when I was a Cub-Master)

Mornin’ everyone!

Zoe, I’ll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes with NYS Maple Surple and a pot of dark roast Marrakesh Express coffee in my R&GV RR mug please.

Spring Has Sprung here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS! Going to go all the way up to 68°F later this afternoon. For now the sun is shining outside, but will dissappear behing some clouds later and rain will happen…

[color=red]Ken[/color], we always knew you were full of it… [:-^] Soap and hot water is good at geeting rid of STUFF you know.

I’m waiting for my son to show up and help me move the aquarium. I have already drained over half the water in it, and will take two more pails out after he gets here. I want to leave just a couple of gal. of water in it to move it. The two old fish will stay in the aquarium while it is moved and then I will pour one pail of cold water back in. Have 7 gal of new water which I will gradually add during the rest of the day. Hope to get it up high enough to turn on the heater for the tank before it gets chilly tonight.

Back to w*rk! Catch you all later…

Right now, we enjoy a spell of sunshine, after periods of heavy snwfall, ran, storm and hail - all within 3 hours! But nevertheless:

Am I bored today!

Now that I got my vision back with those new spectacles, I want to do something meaningful, not only dreaming of layouts I won´t be able to build.

[sigh][sigh][sigh]

I better stay out of Petra´s way for the rest of the day - she already told me I am a grumpy old man!

Ever wanted to run a real HO scale steam train on your layout? Then take a look at this:

HO scale 0-4-0 Steam Switcher

The thingy is made by Lutz Hielscher of Germany, a manufacturer of steam operated toys.

Help is on the way. [:D]

we had sn*w day before yesterday, it was big juicy flakes and fell and stuck to everything. I WOULD have said “what a pretty sight” had it been Nov./Dec. and it was the first snow of the season, but instead I cursed it!

Second…you are bored… and need to find something meaningful, so why NOT start looking into what you can do charity-wise in your area {or for the whole country or better yet, for all of Europe} for those with imparied vision?

YOU SAID you were interested in finding out about DOING something?

Why not ask the Dr. who wrote your prescription what he thinks is the biggest need to fill? OR the local eye-glasses place how many peope they turn away who cannot afford the glasses they need? ask the local catholic charities or the like {food distribution places or soup kitchens} if they know how many people need glasses, or if they would start polling people they serve as to their eyeglasses needs so you can get raw data on the need in your area? or the “state” you may live in or whatever district you are in?

Once you get some raw data, if they have such things as gov’t grants over there, then perhaps you could write a grant request for a formalized plan of what you intend to do? Perhaps you have a retired CEO’s group {we have one called “S.C.O.R.E.” here who helps peole get businesses off the

Good afternoon. 47 here now, but I’ll wait a few hours when it should be near 60 to go out and take my walk.

Richard, can I get some of what you’ve got for my wife? If a doctor tells her not to talk, it might work, because she certainly doesn’t listen to me.

I got an email from Doctor Di, my dentist, to remind me of my cleaning appointment at 10 AM this morning. It said, in part,
When: April 2, 2015 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM (UTC)

Even though the time seems wrong, it is technically correct because it is labelled UTC, which stands for Coordinated Universal Time, sometimes called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Zulu (Z.) 10 AM EDT = 1400 Zulu. I mentioned this to Doctor Di and she said it was a new system and they are still working the bugs out of it. She also asked me to forward her my explanation so they can get it fixed.

You would only want a little. The full dose is a bit of a bear.

On the recovery front, I think I have finally turned the corner. I am feeling better today than yesterday; the first time I have been able to say this since the accident. The biggest annoyance today, aside from the whole not-being-able-talk thing, is the healing in my lip has hit the itching stage. (Not because of infection, just the normal course of healing.) The stitches come out tomorrow afternoon and I am ready. The rest of the body is full of aches and pains. It feels sort of like I rode a bike into the back of an SUV.

Why does it seem things always breakdown in bunches. Just last month I had to replace my water heater. I went with a tankless so I think at least I’ll save some in the long run. This week, I had to replace my well pressure tank because the bladder was leaking. It was short cycling because it couldn’t hold pressure which was causing the well to switch off and on rapidly. The switch burned out while I had the dishwasher running so it wasn’t able to draw water. This cause the intake valve switch to fail. This turned out to be good

Hi guys just a quick few words from “Bonnie Scotland”. I apologise for being absent for some time but as some of you my know I had a majorish medical problem I thought everything was cleared up but unfortunately a secondary infection took hold I finished up back in hospital and only got out a few days a go. Hopefully fully recovered! In British hospitals you are not permit any sort of mobile device so I was unable to communicate with the outside world. I hope to be dropping into the diner on a regular basis. Well done Galaxy on raising the monies for Ulrich’s glasses it was a truly great thing you achieved. Well I going to lie down(it’s 9.00 pm here in UK). My wife says I still have to take it easy.

Jecorbett - that´s called Murphy´s Law [swg]

Cambus - good to have you back! Take good care!

I´ll be slowly calling it a day now. I hope I can get a better rest this night than last night. We will be off tomorrow tp see Petra´s aunt in the nursing home. I am afraid this will be one of the last visits we will be able to do. She can hardly move at all, cannot eat alone and her speech is also impaired. But her eyes tell us how glad she is when we are with her! Each time we go there I feel sad. It was the place my Dad died just about two years ago.

Well, I am off - CU tomorrow!

Things are a little different here, at least based on my recent stay. Not only did the hospital have free WiFi in the rooms, but I was even able to use my mobile device in the ICU.

On the furnace thing… I used to be in the greenhouse business and we used a lot of furnace. If a furnace is too large for the job,it heats the area too quickly and shuts off quickly, The area then cools and the furnace turns on. This increases the number cyles of heat and cool and the furnace wears out from repeated off and ons. If the furnace is smaller and takes longer to heat the space the furnace cycles less.

Well, Ulrich: Time flies! It seems liek your father just passed, but my MIL has been gone a few years now too. My mother over a decade, adn while it does seem farther away, it seems as if only aobut 5 years ago.

Thanks for all the responses, and concern over the furnace. cAn’t live in NY without one!

The furnace DOES run a lot come the bitter cold temps {like below 20F which around here now seems to mean jan5th through march 15th!!!}its a trailer, and though we put plastic in the windows, it still leaks. So normal cycling can be a thing for it too. I know for about at least 15 minutes after it stops running if you walk by it you can feel the heat coming off it.

If it IS oversized, a more fitting one would make sense. the thing is, can I squeeze a new car payment into the budget now with everything else, or do we try to wing it for another year or two?

Well, dinner will be pork roast tonight, so best to get it started in the oven! don’t know yet what sides will be.

later!

[8-|]

What people forget is that Murphy was an optimist.

Nice to see some new, returning, rarely visiting or different faces in here!

Well dinner was excellent. dead pig, rotten potatoes, de-cobbed corn. A little salt {for MOH, i rarely use it}, lots or pepper {We both like it} and a meal was had. I have walnutted, choco fudge frosted browines for dessert.

I have been looking at a piece of property in the area that is vacant except for a brick single stall garage on it. It MIght be in the realm of affordability for us, though they are asking way to much, as borne out by the fact that it hasn’t sold in a year and they have dropped it just $2k, They want $23k now for it, may seem like a deal where you are for a lot, but not here. The same price can get you a small lot in a toney deed-restricted underground utilities neighborhood on sale! It was $25k. but they did drop it to $23k, and we could probably get it for $20k, but I’d like it more at about $15-16K.

Here’s the thing about that lot, It CAN have a double wide on it, I will have to find out if they allow single wides, even temporarily. WE COULD move this one if they will.

That garage would make A NICE train room if finished and with a proper sized small heat/ac unit!!

I have also been looking at “park model” smaller models… like this one:

https://www.parkmodelsdirect.com/rm/grayson.asp

it IS smaller, and MOH MIGHT have a hard time getting used to it, but I think we could Downsize, IF we had a basement or storage place {the garage!}

They might not allow something so small, and I would order the plan about 2 feet longer in the LR and kit area as they DO have longer ones.

OR we could finish off the inside of the 14x38 board and batten cabin shell one I want to get, but MOH “doesn’t like the looks of”…oh we can finish it off to look “English tudor” {like MOH wants} with fake stones on the bottom stucco/w/ boards

Evenin’ folks!

Janie, a cup of hot decaf would really be nice right now.

My son came over late morning to give me a hand moving the aquarium. That went according to plan and I am now filling the tank with fresh treated and room temperature water. The two old fish I still have handled the disruption well. We then loaded the rest of the firewood from the driveway in the PiP and we headed to his house. Ended up staying the rest of gthe afternoon and had dinner there. The granddaughters were making paper maché Easter Eggs (And a big mess). It was good just to sit around and relax for the afternoon.

Lte this evening about at sunset I look out my kitchen window and see the old (23 year old) neighbors cat trying to walk by my house. She was obviously struggling. I thought at first maybe she had been hit by a car. But she was able to get up and walk a few feet then collapsed. I put on my coat and went out and knocked on the door over there. Nobody home, so I came back and picked up the poor old girl and cuddled her in my arms. She was wet (it has been lightly raining outside) and just about gone. I took her over to their house and found the back door into their kitchen was open. I carefully laid her down on the carpet and petted her for a couple minutes. By the time I got home I was asking myself what if the neighbors are gone for the weekend… Their dog wasn’t home. So I started looking for ways to get in contact. After several dead end calls to people who might be related, I finally called a teacher hoping she would have a listing of other teachers cell phone numbers. This teacher was a Scoutmaster of one of my Troops for many years and her husband is our County Treasurer. Bingo! He got her cell phone number and called her. Left a message for her to call me, then called me back to let me know. The neighbor called a minute later and sa

Galaxy … I agree it is good to see so many people posting in the Diner !

As I have been saying we are getting ready for visitors for Easter weekend. Some of them are on the highway as I am typing now.

Today, we quickly got some Snake-Away and put it down next to the house. Evidently, there is a Copperhead nest nearby based on seeing baby snakes. The little snakes already have venom, and can poison if they bite. One was trying to strike, and we had nothing with us to try to kill it. It got away. … Now we worry about visiting grandkids and their pets.

Not much model railroading planned for the next few days. I will run trains for guests, and hopefully Murphy’s Law is not applicable this time.

I have Grandpa’s Bunny Rabbit game for the little kids.

Happy Model Railroading
