Good morning MR fans! Mind if I join you? Thought I would stop by the diner and join the conversations. For those of you who glanced at my “back in the saddle” General Forum thread, you already know that I am returning to the hobby after a 5 year hiatus, and am working hard to complete my new layout, that is based on the South Park Division of the Colorado & Southern narrow gauge. For the last few weeks I have been working diligently to complete Como Roundhouse, with complete interior and supporting overhead belt drive (OBD). This stone roundhouse and OBD work is, without a doubt, the most challenging modeling I have ever done. It literally took me 5, 12 hr. days to complete the machine shop and OBD. I’ll post pics of the completed structure. I really look forward to meeting all of you diner patrons. =D

I’m going to a memorial today, I go to a Tue. morning senors group at a big church so one thing is memorials. The husband is 94 and she just turned 91. Most people don’t get around as well as this couple did at 94.

DSSP Fan … [#welcome] … Gppd to see you here. … I like Colorado narrow gauge, but don’t model it. Too mny choices, and not enough resourse and time. … I model mostly CB&Q in about 1960 … Your Como Roundhouse must be impressive. I’d like seeing photos if you can do so.
Frank … Thanks for commentimng on my live stock trailier and providing thoughts and information about possible grain trucks. … I think Slylvan has a grain truck too, but I’m not sure.

Garry, Sylvan has at least five different makes of grain trucks. I have one on the bench to paint and assemble. I have never done a resin kit. A first for everything, I guess.

I spent most of the morning clearing up a problem of why I had not gotten any emails for the past 2 days! TWC was very helpful with the “chat” screen with help in resolving the issue. someone got into my account at TWC and sent all my emails to a @gmail.com account… They are looking into what happened. Hmmmmmmm…? I do know where to check in my account if I stop getting the many, many emails I get everyday again. What ticks me off is that I was expecting a whole bunch of emails relating to things I am currently working on for some of the organizations I volunteer for.

Fantastic job on the roundhouse detail…You’re a Man after My own heart. I just love putting in detail on structures/vehicles, no matter how long it may take…time in that respect to Me is irrelevant…the outcome is worth more to Me, just seeing how close I can come to My vision, of a finished project. Along the way, of many trials and errors, I usually find better ways to accomplish My vision. Just as in climbing a Mountain…the climb…is more important than getting to the top. Looking forward to seeing more of Your work!
Garry, I forgot about Sylvan…they do have about 8 grain trucks like You were looking to do…single axles though…but good enough. Peruse the link I gave You about them.
Garry…One more ting’…You say You wanted to have a tarp on the grain truck…A little tip for the tarp…coffee can aluminum peel off seals…the ones that You find on coffee cans plastic/tin, that have to be peeled off. They will hold their shape, once formed and can be painted. Can be cut with a pair of scissors.

Welcome to the Diner. [#welcome] Lots of us Ol’ Pharts hang out here. But in keeping your ears open you can sure learn a lot of stuff.
My congratulations and praise on the interior of that roundhouse. That is beautiful detailing work. I am impressed and envious at the same time.
I am at work right now so can’t take much time. The LM&E is going through some concrete work, as over the next while I will try to bury three rail lines in concrete (Smooth it) under my elevated Union Station. This tooo shall be an experience.

If You are just looking for a nice fine line stripe along the side of the body and even cab…look into Automotive pin-stripe tape. It comes in many colors and I have found that the 1/16th size is perfect for a nice fine line without having or trying to paint it.
In the pic’, the Transcon truck in between the two Autos was done with Black pin-stripe tape. The pic’ of the loaded flat bed trailer/tractor, the straps on the fuel tank was done with 1/16th pin-stripe tape. I have even made them even smaller to 1/32nd by trimming them down with a Machinist steel rule and #11 exacto…patience being the key, on a sheet of glass…wears blade tip out fast though, on glass.

Garry, I’ll be trying a Woodland Scenes product called “Smooth It”
I watched a few videos where it is being used and I think it is worth a try.
If any one else has some hints or tips in this area, I am all ears before I get started. [X-)]
Frank, you sure have a great truck collection there and I know they have all been specially built or heavily upgraded. Supurb work there. and thanks for the tips that you give each of us from time to time.
When I first trucked with my Fathers outfit, which were all gas burners, I mainly drove a 9000 White, with a 185 horse Reo motor in it, single axle and pulled everything from a 28’ cement deck, to 48’ flat deck for culverts, machinery and hay bales. At one time we had a contract with Brantford Coach in Winnipeg to bring in new trailers that had been sold or to go on their sales lot. The one that sticks in my mind was the first volume van that Westons Bakery bought. They had a very old fleet and a pretty dumb fleet manager. He ordered a 45’ trailer, 13 ft high, on a single axle with old style vacuum brakes. We still had an old Dodge tractor that had both air and vacuum on it so we got the call. Weston’s had only had it for a couple of weeks and we get another call to take it back to the factory to have a tandem bogie put under it with a chaange up to an air system and, oh yeah, the measurement they had given was meant to be an inside measurement and the factory had made it 13’ overall height. Therefore they couldn’t get the last box of bread in against the roof. You definately need someone who knows what they are doing when ordering new equipment. That cost them alot of money with the upgrades and two round trips to Winnipeg for me.

My dad came back home today. He was supposed to be home yesterday but he missed his flight. He thought the 2th was on a Thursday not on a Wednesday.
Since he’s here I would have problems logging in because he’s a complete internet user.
I weighted myself four days ago at being 200 pounds. I will lose 20 within a month or so. Depending on the walks and the dog.
Train News: I returned my Grand Trunk Western boxcar for the correct number that came in yesterday. Nothing on the layout process it’s been slow these past few weeks.

in early today, didn’t sleep well so figure it’s just as easy to get up and have a cup of coffee before work. If you will permit me to get some things off my chest.
at the moment im kind of down in the dumps. The manager I really like at work is leaving, his last day was yesterday and am going to miss him. I just feel like I’m stuck in a rut there, almost like the tires are spinning but I’m not getting anywhere. Maybe something new in the new year. Also my wife is off right now, she hasn’t used a sick day in almost 10 years and was just be overwhelmed at work, working 7 days for the last few months. She went to her doctor to get stress leave and got it so that’s good. Problem is her company even though she is full time doesn’t cover short term sick leave so she has to go though un employment for it. And that may take a few weeks to get started. Money will be tight for a bit but she really needed a break, I went from seeing a person who really enjoyed her job to a person who hated it with a passion all within a year too.
well best get moving, kind of,lol I don’t go into work until 7 but want to browse around. I work tomorrow also until 3:30 also and want to strat. A small modelling project for my rod hockey game. I’m going to cut out the plastic net and replace it with real mesh. I have a old mosquito net that is almost perfect size scale for it. So want to spend some time at the bench working on that on Sunday.

Grain trucks… Magnuson used to make a resin cast kit, I believe Walthers took them over, but I don’t see any offering of it in the catalog. You can use one of those GC lazor kit body’s and build Your grain body, just remember to put the bracing outside of body and smooth inside, like plywood on a homemade farmers grain truck. Rear gate would look the same as the sides, but with a opening like a small gate that can be opened like in a dump truck. I have seen some home builds that started out as a dump, converted to a grain truck. You have to give it some thought, as to how to get the grain out once at the mill…rather than shoveling it out…time consuming. For how one would look or if You want to take the plunge and purchase a Sheepscot feed truck body, they look exactly like a grain truck…if not, You can at least see what one looks like:

Grain Trailers…Should You want them…again You will run into the same thing as far as era is concerned and may have to scracth Your own or purchase a Wilson grain trailer kit from Lonestar. They will be around 60’s era and above. They are fine kits…true 1/87 scale, finer detail than Sylvan, but cost more and are ABS Plastic, not resin. I have built three of their grain trailers and two flat bed kits, quite some time ago, when they were cheaper:

Thanks for the cudo’s…the glazing is just the clear styrene that came in the kit, all glued together with GS Hypo cement, including the plastic window frame. I like using it because it will stick to painted surfaces and is very strong, when cured. Just a few drops is all that is needed, unlike a solvent cement that will smear if not careful. This is fairly thick, clear cement, drys clear also. Jewelers use it for setting stones, in rings and jewelery. That building was made to have parts removable, side wall and complete roof and slide in doors. The frame You see on the wall is 3/16 and 5/16th white pine, that I cut on My various table saws and glued to the styrene wall using original contact cement. It is extremely strong. Interior lighting is strip SMD’s, that also are removable, they just rest in the trusses. A couple of pic’s when I was building it:

As a vendor, I can tell you that I do not need your card to put charges on it. I only need to know your card number, the expiration date, and your zip code, and I can enter that information on my terminal and it will show up as a telephone order. So the chip does not protect you from that.
What the chip will do is eliminate the need for someone in the store to touch your credit card. And even that is not really true, since you will hand your card to a waitress or some such, who will run it and bring it back to you.
Do you eat at any Jordanian restraunats? Pay cash in the restraunts, and sea if that helps.

John Boy … I have not used that material, but it should work well for you. … I used plaster in my streets with streetcar tracks. After it was dry, I used the corner edge of a putty knife to make groves to clear for wheel flanges. … I added a very small amount of black acrylic paint to the wet plaster so it was a light gray color instead of white.
DSSP … I suggest you post the photo of your excellent Como roundhouse in Weekend Phto Fun so others may enjoy seeing it.
Lion … That explains why I must enter a zip code when I pay at the pump in gas stations. … I generally use cash for small purchases at grocery stores, etc. There is a lot to be said for using real money.

Off today for sawbone test at local hospital. Have developed a lump under the skin on my right chest. Going to get test run to figure out what it is and what is causing it. Very tender area.
