Hi Bill, that’s interesting to read about NZ Railways being 3’-6" NG.
For some reason Facebook threw this at me last week and I thought that you or Bear might know a bit more about this loco.

New Zealand DA class locomotives being built at the GMDL plant in London Ontario Canada, 1963.
I’d wondered why the Cab-side Windows were set inwards how they are.
The Trucks look like they’ve been borrowed from a Boxcar.

I suspect that that’s close to the truth–they probably put them on temporarily to make it easy to push the loco around and will swap the trucks out at some point, perhaps when the loco arrives at its home.

Ya lucky dog Bill! Id like to visit New Zealand one day. A beautuful country, that’s for sure.
News to me that it’s all narrow guage over there. Interesting.

Well, can’t seem to find any history on the Arthur’s Pass bridge to save my soul.

And this poor resolution photo from Alamy. The specific date is apparently debatable.


Zooming in, you can see there used to be masonry piers at some point.
As we all know, water is a heavy extreme force. Perhaps the piers failed in heavy rain waters. Maybe thier solution was to ram two rows of timbers per bent, deep into the ground with a pile driver, as water would have much less resistance around a post, then a wall.
Just speculation, Don’t Know.

I live outside of a town that was basically founded by the Grand Trunk Pacific railway. That town Edson was created there as a division point where additional power was added to trains as they approached the Rocky Mountains. At the time of the railroad coming thru around 1900 there was already a small town with a few sawmills, blacksmith, general store ect. Originally folks all figured this is where the division point would be as it was in about the right spot for the division point between Jasper and Edmonton. In actuality this route was identified by early explorers as the lowest elevation pass over the rockies Yellowhead Pass. And at one point though to be the future route of the Canadian Pacific.

By the time the railroad finally reached the area all the land around here had been bought up by speculators. So the railway in its wisdom pushed a further west about 10 miles. Here they created Edson (Named after some railway superintendent if i recall correctly). About 10 years ago the town when thru the long process of consultation and whatnot and paid the cost of installing crossing arms and the whistle went silent in the town founded by the Railway. I live a couple miles east of the original town about 3/4 miles away from the now CN main line and we still get the whistle :slight_smile:

Good Morning Diners. Zoe, coffee and wheat toast please.

Got the wall/ceiling repairs finished for the bathroom repaint this morning. Glad to get the shop vac out of there with the sanding done. Just have to get the kids out of it this morning so I can kill the power to it. Have to pull a light fixture off the wall.

Ran into another snag on my station platform project. I have to move one of the tracks over a smidge. Right now, it fits between the two sets of tracks, but just barely. If any car rolling by rocks at all, they’ll hit it. Luckily, it isn’t ballasted down, so the only real pain will be moving the feeders. Still debating how I tie the roof sections together.

Just a place-holder photo while I wrestle with Samsung tablet and phone. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to access the Diner. The path seems to lengthen day by day…:flushed_face:

That station platform, is it possible to shave off the necessary width? Could be easier than realigning the track…:thinking:

What’s the issue you’re facing? I have not had any difficulty reading or posting here.

Engine -1988, is correct, the photo below shows Da1400 being unloaded on to its actual bogies, at Auckland in 1955.

It’s possibly an Android issue. Both my tablet and this smart phone run on Android.
Back in the day I had no difficulties; however since acquiring a Samsung phone (on which I am currently posting) and some time ago a Samsung tablet, access has been more problematic. (And very recently the keyboard has changed to Español (US) )

The Samsung products favour Android.

@der5997 I suppose I could, but I don’t think moving the track will be that bad. The track that has to be moved has a sort of S shape to it so I think I can adjust how the track comes off the turnouts at each end without having to touch the turnouts themselves. If it turns out to be a lot more than that thought, I’ll take a hard look at how I could trim the roof as that’s the part of concern. Thanks for the idea!
