Jeffrey's Trackside Diner For October 2025

Here is a screen shot of my HR at 38 while watching hockey. My team must be winning or it wouldn’t be that low.

This is how far I went in one week a while back, I usually do about half this in a week.

This is me sleeping. The white line represents how much I move. The wife often checks to see if I am still alive, then goes DARN! Guess I am still stuck with him.

Let me clarify. I see a cardiologist on a regular basis. I’m not concerned about the anomalous 38 HR reading. It perks up quick enough and excels at the stress tests I take from time to time. It’s not a matter of fitness because I have no side effects with the low HR. The low number itself triggers a concern. It’s not just a simple matter of the lower it is the better,

Weight training has to be included in how we measure fitness and health, and pure endurance has gotten way overplayed as a measure of fitness in society. The human body evolved not out of a concern about how many miles it can cover in what time frame while wearing favorable clothing. It is concerned about being able to tote 10 pounds of fish and 20 pounds of game over unimproved terrain for several miles back to camp.

Agreed, I have no issues with muscle tone as I have been told, I have weights, but rarely use them as working the acres and being quite active over all keeps me well toned. I wouldn’t think twice about putting a 65lb backpack on and heading off to the mountains for several days.

Good health comes from diet. What you eat is the determining factor, not how much you eat. Being fit can determine BP/ cholesterol levels/ blood sugar issues and a host of other things but those appear to be the big three these days.

The heart is the most important muscle in the body and whether it is stressed by heavy lifting or long runs it needs to be kept in tip top condition. Weight lifting puts stress on the heart for short durations while endurance situations put stress on the heart for longer periods. I have seen weight lifters get into trouble when they have all of a sudden decided to go for a run when that has not been part of their program.

I did supervised HIIT training to see if I could get from excellent shape to superior shape. It did not take much effort on my part, but staying in that kind of shape is a full time job. I try to stay at the top of the “good shape” to bottom of the “excellent shape” range, it requires little effort or time and I feel great.

I never nap or have to get up to pee in the night.

I witnessed something I found humorously ironic the other day.

A brand new store opened near me in Middlefield, Ohio called Hartville Hardware. I’ve been frequenting the store recently as I’m helping my wife rehab a condominium that her son and family recently moved out of.

So I discovered that Stihl has a promotion going on that includes an excellent savings on their AK30 rechargeable batteries and while in the store I wandered over to the Stihl section to check them out.

I browsed around for a while and wanted to ask some questions so I went to the nearby ‘Customer service’ desk. As I approached I saw two women looking at a computer screen. The one was looking over the other’s shoulder and giving pointers about the screen they were using, “now click on that tab for a drop down menu, then right click that… etc.”. So the ironic thing (to me anyway) was that the woman giving the computer lessons was Amish. The other was a non-Amish ‘Yankee’ as the English are often referred to in Ohio, anyway. Both Middlefield and Hartville are in communities with large Amish populations.

I just thought it was a bit humorous. As it turns out I did buy a Stihl battery blower which included two batteries. The AK30 battery sells for $170 each and the blower with two and a charger was an even $300. Now I have three new Stihl battery powered tools. A MSA-80 chain saw and an HTA50 pole saw and now this handy BGA60 blower. Love Stihl products. I’ll be looking for a new gas powered chain saw soon as I just gave away my 40 year old 034-AV saw to my nephew.

Obviously, they all have to be ‘hostled’ in using a diesel switcher. Must make for some interesting moves.

If any of you have photos of your layout and are willing to share, please post a shot or two on the Weekend Photo Fun thread.

It’s great to see photos of other modelers’ layouts. They don’t have to be expert layouts or expert photos! (Ask me how I know.)

We just like seeing what others are doing, and everyone is appreciated and encouraged by that thread!

We agree on a lot. Short bursts mixed in with periods of long aerobic is the way to go.

I have always viewed food as sustenance more than recreation. I hate going out to dinner and curbing hunger at home with snack foods. I wait for meal time. In the wild, humans endured some periods of hunger while looking for food, so me being hungry for a couple of hours waiting for mealtime to show up is actually a healthy thing to do.

My previous comment was based upon 50 years of health promotion that focuses solely on measuring how much time it takes a jogger to run a certain distance. Taken to the extreme, a person can constantly improve their distance and times to the point they become an unhealthy marathoner whose body is constantly trying to recover from the endurance abuse the person subjects it to.

Instead of endurance metrics, maybe measure fitness by how many times a person can lift their body weight over their head in 30 seconds. Although, if you focus solely on how much weight you lift, like a gym rat might do, your body mass increases excessively too

I’m amused by our new War Secretary and Health Secretary having pull up and push up competitions. I think they are on the right track by displaying good health by those metrics as well.

I get my wife to measure my BMI with a caliper on occasion just for my own curiosity. She is a Veterinary surgeon with degrees in animal nutrition. Anything lower than 15% body fat I start to not feel great. It requires too much strict food management to keep feeling good and have good energy levels and I have no interest in that. You can see where my six pack is but it is not a chiseled look by any means.

I don’t eat for recreation but will have a pig out on occasion knowing it is not a daily occurrence. Food is a substance that is required to live, eating more than you need is substance abuse. Of course a good glass of scotch doesn’t hurt once in a while.

Hey, cut out all of this healthy talk. You are ruining my Margarita, Cheese and Nachos.

Go ahead and enjoy yourself Rich. It is a stunning day here and I will be having a snort out on the patio in a bit. Not many outdoor Happy Hours left in the year.
First I need to go pick up a brand new box of Atlas code 83 flex track. I was saying I didn’t have any extra track on hand and I hate that. Then low and behold a guy on marketplace has a new box for $20.00ca and he is only 8 minutes away.

Hey. Nuts are healthy. Stay away from the pretzels. Calories without nutrients can be a problem.

Before I retired, my lunch routine was the typical eat what you want at a local restaurant, or pack what is convenient

Since I retired about 9 months ago, my lunch now consists of a turkey sandwich with spinach lettuce on keto bread. I’ve had that every day for lunch for the past 9 months. It’s gotten to the point where that’s what I understand lunch to be and anything else is simply not good enough lol.

Dinner with the wife and friends is fair game for recreational foods. Sunday football at the bar with a couple of Shock Top brews is the norm in the fall.

Wow, nice! Send about 10 sticks to me. I am planning some modifications.

Rich

There are holes in the ties!!! What RR puts holes in their ties??? I have never used Atlas track before…Now I know why! Holes in the ties will ruin my photography! :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Maybe I can use it in future tunnels!

But then again, MAYBE NOT! I like to take pics of the inside of my tunnels, WITHOUT HOLES IN THE TIES!!!

I have some sticks of Atlas Code 83 flex track. There are no holes in the ties.

Rich

So maybe mine is old stuff or yours is. Did they change the molds at some point?

I have a few very newly purchased sticks, no holes.

Just re-read your reply. None of the old stuff ever had holes either.

It is new track I got. The poor guy bought tons of stuff and never got around to building his empire. I felt sorry for him, a nice guy, he is moving.
